SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. Most of the ACT is entirely multiple choice. All you have to worry about when answering the questions is that you’re filling in the correct answer bubble! But then there’s that (optional) Writing section, which requires you to of men give your answer in words. How are you supposed to write a persuasive essay in 40 minutes? What format should your essay have? Is there an ACT essay template that can guarantee you a high score? We'll answer these questions in this article. feature image credit: homework ritual by woodleywonderworks, used under CC BY 2.0/Cropped from original. What Does Your ACT Essay Need?

5 Key Elements. In order to do well on ACT Writing, your essay will need to have the following five elements (not necessarily in this order): The first thing the grader will see is your opening paragraph, so you should make a good impression. Don't just jump right into the meat of your essay - introduce your perspective (your thesis statement) and how it relates to the other perspectives given by the essay prompt. You don't necessarily have to start out by writing your introduction (you can always leave a few lines blank at the top of your essay and come back to it after you've written your example paragraphs), but you MUST include it. 2. Your Thesis Statement (should be in your introduction) You must take a perspective on the issue presented in the prompt paragraph and invented or discovered state it clearly . I advise using one of the roles and women, three perspectives the ACT gives you as your position/perspective; you can come up with your own perspective, but then you have more work to do in the essay (which is not ideal with a time constraint).

Your thesis statement (the statement of your perspective) should go in the introduction of your essay. 3. A Discussion of All Three Perspectives. In your essay, you must discuss all three perspectives the ACT gives you . Make sure to discuss pros as well as cons for the perspectives you don’t agree with to show you understand the food irradiation pros and cons, complexities of the of men, issue. 4. Examples or Reasoning to Support Each Point. To support your arguments for microscope mania answers and against each perspective, you need to draw on reasoning or specific examples . This reasoning should be in the same paragraph as the arguments. For instance, if your argument is about how globalization leads to greater efficiency, you should include your support for of men and women this argument in the same paragraph. And it's not enough to just say “Because freedom” or “Because Stalin” or something like that as your support and leave it at that. You need to actually explain how your reasoning or examples support your point.

Avoid discussing multiple points in one paragraph. Instead, our recommended strategy is to discuss one perspective per Sociological of Sports Research, paragraph . This organization will not only make it easier for you to roles and women stay on track, but will also make it easier for your essay's scorers to follow your reasoning (always a good thing). The 5-paragraph structure might seem boring, but it is a good way to keep your points organized when writing an essay. For the and cons, ACT essay, you'll need an of men introduction, three body paragraphs (one paragraph for each perspective), and microscope mania a conclusion . Of Men! You should state your thesis in your introduction and conclusion (using different words in your conclusion so that you're not repeating yourself exactly). So how do you write in this five paragraph structure on the ACT? I'll show you how to or discovered put the plan into action with an essay template that can be used for any ACT essay question. First, here's the prompt I'll be using: Public Health and Individual Freedom. Most people want to be healthy, and most people want as much freedom as possible to do the roles, things they want. Unfortunately, these two desires sometimes conflict.

For example, smoking is prohibited from most public places, which restricts the freedom of some individuals for the sake of the health of others. Likewise, car emissions are regulated in many areas in order to is math invented reduce pollution and of men and women its health risks to maryland others, which in turn restricts some people’s freedom to drive the vehicles they want. In a society that values both health and freedom, how do we best balance the two? How should we think about conflicts between public health and individual freedom? newspeak 1984 essay Written February 27, 2000; Modified May 9, 2000. If you quote or paraphrase from my essay, please give me due credit. Language as the #147;Ultimate Weapon#148; in Nineteen Eighty-Four. George Orwell, like many other literary scholars, is interested in the modern use of the English language and, in particular, the abuse and misuse of English. He realises that language has the power in politics to roles of men and women mask the truth and mislead the microscope public, and he wishes to increase public awareness of this power. He accomplishes this by of men and women, placing a great focus on Newspeak and the media in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four . Demonstrating the repeated abuse of language by the government and by Dead, the media in his novel, Orwell shows how language can be used politically to deceive and manipulate people, leading to a society in which the roles of men and women people unquestioningly obey their government and mindlessly accept all propaganda as reality. Language becomes a mind-control tool, with the is math invented ultimate goal being the destruction of will and of men imagination. As John Wain says in his essay, #147;[Orwell#146;s] vision of 1984 does not include extinction weapons . . . He is not interested in extinction weapons because, fundamentally, they do not frighten him as much as spiritual ones#148; (343). Paul Chilton suggests that the language theme in Orwell#146;s novel has its roots in Aspects of Sports Research Essays the story of the Tower of Babel (2). When God destroys the roles of men Towel of Babel, the civilizations which have contributed to the construction of the Tower suffer ever-after from the Curse of Confusion.

The Curse both makes languages #147;mutually unintelligible#148;, and microscope answers alters their nature so that #147;they no longer lucidly [express] the nature of things, but rather [obscure] and [distort] them#148; (Chilton, 2). Orwell#146;s Newspeak , the ultra-political new language introduced in Nineteen Eighty-Four , does precisely that: it facilitates deception and manipulation, and its purpose is to restrict understanding of the real world. Chilton also suggests that a corollary to roles of men and women this is that #147;each post-Babel language [becomes] a closed system containing its own untranslatable view of the world#148; (2). Certainly, the mania answers ultimate aim of Newspeak is to enclose people in an orthodox pseudo-reality and isolate them from the real world. Whereas people generally strive to roles of men and women expand their lexicon, the government in Dead Poetry? Essay Nineteen Eighty-Four actually aims to cut back the Newspeak vocabulary. One of the roles of men and women Newspeak engineers says, #147;[we#146;re] cutting the language down to the bone . . . Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year#148; (55).

By manipulating the language, the government wishes to alter the public#146;s way of thinking. This can be done, psychologists theorise, because the words that are available for the purpose of communicating thought tend to influence the way people think. The linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf was a firm believer in maryland this link between thought and language, and he theorised that #147;different languages impose different conceptions of reality#148; (Myers 352). So when words that describe a particular thought are completely absent from a language, that thought becomes more difficult to think of and communicate. For the roles of men and women Inner Party, the goal is to impose an orthodox reality and make heretical thought (#145;thoughtcrime#146;) impossible. #147;In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible,#148; explains the Newspeak engineer, #147;because there will be no words in which to express it#148; (55). By design, Newspeak narrows the range of thought and shortens people#146;s memories.

It is therefore ideal for a totalitarian system, in which the government has to rely on a passive public which lacks independent thought and which has a great tolerance for mistakes, both past and present. #147;To expand language is to expand the ability to think,#148; says Myers (353). Conversely, to restrict language, as with Newspeak, is to named after restrict the of men range of thought. Chilton identifies the specific features of Newspeak that help restrict thought: #147;reduced complexity, few abstractions, and no selfreference#148; (37). Maryland Named! Such narrowed public thought is what the Inner Party prefers, because a public that lacks the ability to think vividly poses less of a threat than one that can readily criticise the government and defend itself from harm. However, an interesting consequence of this narrowed thought is that the public#146;s memory is also effectively shortened. #147;The Inner Party [deprives] people of their own words and in so doing, deprives them of memory#148; (Lewis and Moss 51). After O#146;Brien forces Winston to embrace Ingsoc, for instance, Winston#146;s imagination decays and he #147;[can] no longer fix his mind on any one subject for more than a few moments at a time#148; (301).

Winston, like the majority of the public, suffers when he is robbed of his words and thoughts. Consequently, #147;memory, with its attendant richness and variety, atrophies#148; since #147;memories die when they go unrehearsed in words#148; (Lewis and Moss 51). Given that Newspeak is such a politically-motivated language, why does the public in Nineteen Eighty-Four accept it? After all, the Party is undertaking a project of monumental proportions: they are trying to completely replace a common language (English, or #147;Oldspeak#148;), and one would expect great opposition to such a plan. The Party is able to achieve this by again employing psychological tactics. Instead of forcing the public to use Newspeak by roles of men, law, the Party ensures that the public is immersed in the new language. Food Pros And Cons! Nobody is forced to read or write in Newspeak, but #147;its ubiquitous broadcast creates a pressure to employ it simply in order to of men communicate economically#148; (Chilton 37). Orwell#146;s novel paints a nightmarish picture of answers a totalitarian system gone to the absolute extreme, but it is a novel that is fundamentally about of men and women, psychological control of the public. Of course, the Party does employ torture as part of its control regimen, but the psychological control tactics are the dominant ones in the novel.

While physical punishment is difficult to administer, psychological tactics (manipulation of people through language) can be continuously applied to Is God Dead in Modern Poetry? the general public without raising great public opposition or fear #151; and that is where its strength lies. It is for this reason that #147;Newspeak rather than torture is planned as the way to erase thoughtcrime#148; (Stansky 88). However, while Newspeak is and women a very significant method of maryland named mind control through language, it is just a part of a greater Inner Party scheme. Roles Of Men And Women! It is, in fact, the Party-controlled media in the novel that expertly uses Newspeak as well as other linguistic trickery to spread its propaganda and brainwash the mania answers public. The media is powerful as a tool for manipulation both because the roles of men and women public is widely exposed to it, and also because the public trusts it. The telescreens continuously shout bursts of news and propaganda throughout the day, and the people listen intently and microscope mania cheer at roles and women #145;good news#146; (victories) and are driven to rage by #145;bad news#146;. The characters in Orwell#146;s novel are slaves of the Dead in Modern Poetry? media; they revere it as an oracle. When the telescreens initiate the Two Minutes Hate, for instance, the people are roused to roles of men a frenzy: #147;People were leaping up and is math invented or discovered down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices . . Of Men And Women! . [a girl] had begun crying out #145;Swine! Swine!

Swine!#146;#148; (16). Certainly, in Nineteen Eighty-Four , #147;[media information] does control some of the ways in Essay which [people] think about and assess the world#148; (Lewis and roles of men Moss 47). The Party is interested in masking the truth, and so the media manipulates language to present a distorted reality. As Orwell says in his essay Politics and the English Language , #147;Political language . . . is designed to food and cons make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to of men pure wind#148; (150). In the novel, these lies are quite obvious. For example, the media (controlled by the Party, of course) continually refers to the Ministries of Truth, Peace, Love, and Plenty. In reality, however, the Ministry of is math invented Truth is concerned with the falsification of records, and the Ministry of Peace deals with warfare. The Ministry of Love is #147;the really frightening one#148; (6) as it is essentially a place for the questioning and torturing of suspected criminals. Roles! The Ministry of Plenty makes up economic figures to convince the public that the economy is in good shape, even though there are great shortages of all commodities due to maryland named the war. Although the irony in the titles is blatantly obvious, Orwell is making a point about roles of men, how the media can use language to mask the is math invented truth. The totalitarian state of Oceania is in a constant state of war, and part of the Party#146;s ongoing struggle is to keep the public satisfied with this warfare.

If the public were dissatisfied, they would resent the shortage of food and other commodities and possibly rebel against the Party. The Party therefore has to distract the public#146;s attention away from the negative side of warfare, and they use the media to do this. By using only language that carries neutral or positive connotations to talk about anything related to war, the media successfully soothes an otherwise resentful public. And Women! For instance, the media never reports on armstrong the #147;twenty or thirty [rocket bombs] a week falling on London#148; (28), but rather inundates peoples#146; lives with good news about victories. Winston#146;s telescreen announces, #147;Our forces in roles of men and women South India have won a glorious victory. I am authorised to say that the action we are now reporting may well bring the war within measurable distance of mania its end#148; (28). Similar reports follow throughout the of men entire novel, constantly celebrating the capture of enemies and the conquering of new territories, but never admitting any kind of defeat. In many ways, the Is God Poetry? media is relying on the principle that a piece of information that is repeated often enough becomes accepted as truth. Winston, a particularly strong-minded individual, is continually amazed to see his friends and colleagues swallow the lies that the media dishes out. For this form of brainwashing (#145;Duckspeak#146;) to roles and women be effective, #147;you just say things frequently and people eventually understand and say it themselves#148; (Chilton 27). This brainwashing is done through the words of the telescreens, newspapers and magazines.

The media is Is God in Modern Poetry? Essay skilled at engineering #145;truth#146; through language, and one of the most disturbing consequence of this developed in the novel is that the Party has ultimate control over history. After all, language is the link to history. Winston#146;s job in the Ministry of Truth is to modify news items and other documents that in one way or another make the Party look bad. After he replaces an original document with the modified one, all the originals are destroyed. Orwell describes the process: This processes of continuous alteration was applied not only to roles newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets . . . Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of microscope mania news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. Roles! (42) Lewis and Research Moss believe that #147;the tactic is to obliterate history so that centres of opposition cannot grow#148; (51). Roles And Women! Orwell shows us evidence that this tactic is working: even the main character, who knows exactly what is irradiation and cons going on with the falsification of documents, has trouble recalling who Oceania is really at war with at roles of men the present. It is either Eurasia or Eastasia, but Winston is not sure because the Party keeps changing history.

This nagging doubt eats away at irradiation pros Winston until he no longer knows what reality is; by the end of the novel, he is of men and women willing to accept the Party#146;s reality. Orwell#146;s novel asks the wealth philosophical question: if all available evidence shows something to and women be true, is it not true? Winston struggles with this idea of #147;Reality control#148; (37) as he works at the Ministry of Truth. #147;The frightening thing,#148; Winston thinks to himself, #147;[is] that it might all be true. If the Party [can] thrust its hand into the past and Sociological of Sports Research say of this or that event, it never happened #150; that, surely, [is] more terrifying than mere torture and death#148; (36). Roles And Women! One of Winston#146;s assignments is to invent a biography of a fictional soldier named Ogilvy, so that he can be honoured by Big Brother in a public address. After writing the invented or discovered description of Ogilvy#146;s life, Winston marvels at how #147;once the roles and women act of forgery [is] forgotten, [Ogilvy will] exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar#148; (50).

As well as altering the past by manipulating written language, the Party has an ingenious plan to break the link with the is math invented real past by introducing a language barrier. When #147;all real knowledge of Oldspeak [disappears] . Roles Of Men! . . the whole literature of the past will have been destroyed#148; (56). After a few generations, when people are no longer capable of decoding information from the past, there will no longer even be a need to censor the history that has the potential for breeding unorthodox ideas #151; it will be completely out of the public#146;s reach. Thus, the manipulation of language and text not only effects the present, but also the past and future in more than one way. A Party slogan in the novel reads, #147;Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past#148; (37). Orwell#146;s novel is extreme, but it is not necessarily a prediction of the future. Rahv believes that the is math invented or discovered book#146;s #147;importance is roles mainly in its powerful engagement with the maryland present#148; (183). Indeed, politicians have used written language to manipulate history both in and women the past and present. There was much distortion of history during the Stalinist era, #147;when such standard works of irradiation misinformation as the Soviet Encyclopaedia changed constantly with the party line, so that in successive editions Trotsky was first the hero of the Civil War, then an agent of the Mensheviks, and the western powers#148; (Woodcock 177). Patrick Wright suggests that the issue is still very much alive in the late twentieth century, citing as an example #147;[the British Secretary for Education, who] refused a number of proposed syllabus systems for the teaching of history in schools, finding them insufficiently assiduous in their promotion of the mythical, rather than simply historical, values of national unity and pride#148; (111). Equally alive today is the fear that politicians and the media abuse language to and women hide truth.

Orwell gives examples of how politicians can twist words to deceive people in his essay Politics and the English Language : #147;Defenceless villages are bombarded from the invented or discovered air, the inhabitants driven out into the countryside . . . this is called pacification . Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry: this is of men and women called transfer of population or rectification of frontiers #148; (148). Is Math Invented Or Discovered! Woodcock refers to the modern jargon-filled English used by #147;newspaper editors, bureaucrats, radio announcers, and parliamentary speakers#148; who have, just as Orwell feared, a heavy #147;reliance on ready-made phrases#148; (92). Even more disturbing, in the twenty-first century we have now a rapidly growing, major industry based solely upon the manipulation of language and thought: advertising. Orwell#146;s novel carries a well-founded warning about the powers of language. It shows how language can shape people#146;s sense of reality, how it can be used to conceal truths, and even how it can be used to roles of men and women manipulate history. #147;Language is one of the Dead in Modern Essay key instruments of political dominations, the roles and women necessary and insidious means of the #145;totalitarian#146; control of maryland named reality#148; (Rai, 122).

While language in the traditional sense can expand horizons and improve our understanding of the world, Orwell#146;s novel demonstrates that language, when used in roles of men a maliciously political way, can just as easily become #147;a plot against food pros human consciousness#148; (Rahv, 182). Gender Roles in Society: Definition & Overview - Video & Lesson

A Few Essays That Worked (And a Few That Didn#8217;t) Jacques Steinberg, education correspondent for the Times, appears on the Today show to discuss what works in a college essay. By None None on Publish Date December 6, 2010. In preparation for a segment on NBC#8217;s #8220;Today#8221; show this morning, I reached out to the admissions offices at the University of Virginia and Occidental College in roles of men and women, California for Is God in Modern examples of essays that they considered memorable #8212; for roles good, or ill. Before I share some of these samples, a caveat (one familiar to regular readers of food irradiation pros and cons this blog): while it can be instructive to read actual college admissions essays, trying to copy a particular approach #8212; or in some cases avoid it #8212; can be perilous. That#8217;s because how one responds to an essay can be an intensely personal experience. That said, I would argue that there are some basic lessons to be gleaned from the following examples. Here, for instance, is an roles, excerpt from an essay that was not especially well received at the University of Virginia, in part because the named, writer misjudged the age and of men and women sensibility of his or her audience: John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ was sung by named, Fox’s new show, #8216;Glee.#8217; In one particular episode, a deaf glee club performed this song. I heard it before when John Lennon sang it: unfortunately I did not care much for it. When I watched this episode while the deaf adolescents were singing it, and soon joined by roles, another glee club, it surprisingly affected me#8230; John Lennon sang it like a professional, but what he did not have was the Aspects Essays, emotion behind the words.

He sang it more staccato than legato. He sang it like it was his job, and nothing more. And Women! These singers from Glee sang with powerful emotions. … Another essay, also musical in focus, got a more appreciative read at U.V.A.: I strode in front of 400 frenzied eighth graders with my arm slung over my Fender Stratocaster guitar — it actually belonged to my mother — and launched into the first few chords of Is God Dead in Modern Poetry? Essay Nirvana’s ‘Lithium.’ My hair dangled so low over of men and women, my face that I couldn’t see the crowd in front of lance armstrong wealth me as I shouted ‘yeah, yeah’ in my squeaky teenage voice. I had almost forgotten that less than a year ago I had been a kid whose excitement came from waiting for the next History Channel documentary. It was during the awkward, hormonal summer between seventh and and women eighth grade when I first heard Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ The song shocked my senses — until that point my musical cosmos consisted mainly of my father’s Beatles CDs. I would argue that the admissions committee was able to named relate a little more to this essay than the first. And it was certainly more evocative and detailed. It also conveyed more about the writer (and applicant) #8212; a crucial quality in a college admissions essay. Roles Of Men! I turn, now, to excerpts from a recent essay that struck a visceral chord within the admissions office at Occidental (where, as an aside, President Obama began his college career): My head throbbed as I closed my eyes and tried to convince myself to give up. ‘Come on, Ashley. Put the pencil down.

Just put the pencil down and food irradiation pros go to bed,’ I told myself sternly. I had been hard at work for hours — brutal, mind-numbing hours. I groaned as I moved over to my bed, collapsing in a pile of roles of men and women blankets and closing my eyes. Named! I lay there for a moment or two, gathering strength, gaining courage. My tense shoulders began to roles of men and women unclench as I stretched out and and cons opened my bleary eyes… Suddenly, I bolted upright on my bed, eyes wide, blankets flying. Everything had fallen into place. I stumbled madly to my desk, thumped myself down, and snatched up my pencil. ‘I’ve got it! That’s it!’ I whooped, scribbling furiously, as my brother pounded on my wall for silence.

I had just won another skirmish in roles of men and women, my ongoing battle with the crossword puzzle. What worked here? I#8217;m told the Is God in Modern Poetry?, admissions officers appreciated how the roles of men, writer conveyed her love of words — and in the process told them much about mania answers, herself. As a writer, I admired the way she built a sense of mystery at the outset, one that served to draw the reader in. Roles And Women! I#8217;ll close with an attempt at metaphor that fell a bit flat, at least in its reception at Occidental. Maryland Named! The applicant writes: I believe in jello; a silly greeting, tasty dessert, or the answer to life as we know it? Factor #1: Have you ever tried to roles of men make jello? It takes patience. In Modern Poetry?! First you have to boil the of men and women, water; then mix it with powder, stirring for two minutes; then finally adding the cold water and putting it in the fridge for wealth forty-five minutes.

Think about the creation of people… To share your own thoughts on essay strategies #8212; and, perhaps, some excerpts of your own #8212; please use the comment box below. Comments are no longer being accepted. Although the essays chosen as the #8220;good#8221; examples are well-written, I found the roles, other 2 more interesting. Each of those writers seemed to be struggling to express a concept instead of a fairly typical self-absorbed picture. Obviously. the #8220;good#8221; essays are easier to identify with, but they are also rather juvenile. Our education system tends to Sociological of Sports reward the neat package, not the messy one. Roles! I#8217;d like to Is God Poetry? Essay think that both sets of essay writers deserve an excellent education.

I saw this segment on the Today Show and roles and women I am surprised about the first essay. I understand the after, concept of Glee being a new show and seeming juvenile, but it isn#8217;t. I find the show rather creative for taking older songs, modernizing them, and reintroducing them to a new generation of people. Not to mention it adds new life to a song already loved by the older generation who watch the show as well. If anything it shows the blatant generation gap between the administrators and the students writing their essay. John Lennon was a great artist but it doesn#8217;t mean I#8217;m obligated to be a fan, nor is this student. People should respect the difference of opinion. This student was honest enough to say he/she didn#8217;t like the song and why when performed by roles of men, John Lennon, but found beauty in the song he/she previously dismissed when performed by a group of deaf children. I think that shows a strong sense of self in the student which was, unfortunately, overlooked. Thank you so much for is math or discovered these examples. I will note that the Jello essay uses semicolons improperly.

Grammar errors destroy credibility. I was accepted early decision to Virginia, and folks ask me all the time about my application essay. I wrote about the single moment of shaking an opponent#8217;s hand during a national debate tournament. I was terrified about this opponent, but when I shook his hand, it was cold, limp, and soaking wet. Knowing he was just as nervous as I changed everything for of men and women me. I wanted to share with the application committee my revelation that I don#8217;t need to be intimidated by anyone. My advice for future applicants: Ask yourself what #8220;gift#8221; your essay delivers to the reader. What#8217;s the Is God Dead Poetry?, pay-off for the audience?

If you aren#8217;t writing with the audience in roles of men and women, mind, the essay will seem self-indulgent. Armstrong Wealth! Thanks so much! This is the part of the application that should be removed. Students that write their own essay are at a distinct disadvantage (unless they are among those students that truly do have talent in this area.) Because the of men and women, stakes are so high and the competition so great, more and more families are hiring consultants to either write or heavily edit the essays. Sociological Aspects Essays! A consultant could definitely tidy up the Glee and roles and women the jello essay and make it relevant. At least we know that the Glee and jello essay writers received no assistance. Other than the most competitive schools is anyone reading the maryland, essays?? It seems that a well written essay if accompanied by low standard test scores gets ignored when in fact the essay is a better example of what the student can do.

These students pour over every word as they see their future hanging in the balance. Does the of men and women, admissions committee at University of Maryland actually read the answers to the short answer questions? Do they read the essays? I find these examples and the ensuing comments to be an example of just how subjective college admissions officers are when making their decisions. Some admissions essays must be objectively bad (poor grammar, incoherent prose, etc.) and I imagine that some must be objectively good, however, it seems to me that the great bulk lie in the middle. Lance! In that middle ground then isn’t the merit of one’s essay inextricably tied to of men and women the taste’s of the admissions officers reviewing that essay? Would a brilliant essay by Aspects of Sports Research Essays, Hunter S. Thompson be tossed out because the roles of men, reader hated drug use and non-conformity? Would an essay by Tom Wolfe be rejected because the invented or discovered, reader hated exclamations? Oh my! Maybe that great 18th century wordsmith Charles Dickens pamphlet would be considered too word?

Or Hemingway’s to sparse? What I found so troubling about the admissions cycle when I went through it a decade ago was how arbitrary decisions seemed to be at the top schools. Roles And Women! It always seemed to me that once you were in Is God Dead Poetry?, a pool of qualified applicants (good grades, test scores, extra-curricular activities) that admissions came down to chance. I was admitted to the #1 US New School but admissions at a half a dozen lesser ranked schools where I had GPAs and roles of men and women SATs over the 75% mark. Some friends were admitted everywhere they applied, one friend was denied admission everywhere he applied but his in-state safety school despite the fact that he had mid 1500s SATs, a 4.0 GPA and armstrong wealth founded our schools Environment Club. I’ve never figured out why that happened, I doubt there’s a simple answer. The college a person attends doesn’t define them or set them on a fixed course through life. Roles Of Men! Nevertheless, it is answers, important and it does matter. In fact it matters tremendously to those students and parents who struggle through courses and bills to roles make their dreams of answers education a success, and of men and women that’s why it is so terrifying that chance and subjectivity play such a large role in the college admissions process.

The purpose of the essay is to maryland named reveal something personal about yourself to the admissions committee that isn#8217;t conveyed elsewhere in the application. Roles Of Men And Women! The first essay didn#8217;t work because it was analysis of the merits of two versions of a song. I#8217;m surprised that the crossword puzzle essay was offered as an essay that worked #8212; it seems unoriginal, forced, overly dramatic, self-coscious. I read plenty of those as an Sociological Aspects of Sports Research Essays, admissions officer. The debate one worked because it revealed the author as an observant, empathetic and mature person.

And for jello #8212; I think that could have been a very funny essay with some good editing, and perhaps may have revealed the author as a quirky kid with a good sense of humor. Roles Of Men! I agree with lp#8217;s analysis. Irradiation! It should be drummed into roles every applicant: whatever the subject, the Is God in Modern Essay, real point is to provide a sense of yourself. Unless you are some kind of master stylist, writing about #8220;other things#8221; will not impress #8212; and even superlative style might very well be lost on of men and women, an admissions officer who is, after all, looking for food irradiation and cons a reason to make a decision #8212; any decision #8212; about your application. I too think the crossword puzzle essay seems silly and forced, but I also think the other musical essay was trite and forced. I am afraid that this is what the and women, admissions process has reduced essay writing to. With the or discovered, exception of the second entry, (the Nirvana kid), the roles of men and women, rest fell flat. He seemed to convey his thoughts fluidly, and in the manner that he was thinking them.

The first entry was of minor interest#8230; but obvioulsy didn#8217;t achieve what it was intended to achieve. The third was simply terrible. Sociological Of Sports! Enough said. Of Men! The fourth had redeeming value. There are multiple purposes for the essay. One is to microscope mania answers guage an applicant#8217;s ability to write. Fortunately, many employers, like The Times, still value this ability. If your child does not #8220;have a talent#8221; in this area, he/she needs to get to work. More important, if a consultant writes an applicant#8217;s essay, that applicant is cheating.

Your answer implies that it is acceptable for a student to do so. It is no more acceptable for of men a consultant to write the essay than it is for armstrong a student to exaggerate in roles, her list of extracurricular activities. The essay is important and valuable and should remain a part of the application process. It#8217;s not the topic, or it#8217;s generational relationship to named the reader, it#8217;s the roles of men, writing, Sentence structure, organization, rhetorical flourish; the good essays have all three of Is God in Modern these. The poor essays just needed some editingor, in roles and women, some cases, a lot of editing. Pros! The College Application Essay is one of the best ways to roles introduce yourself to the Admissions Committee but must be done with care or it will reduce your chances for admission.

Certainly there is invented or discovered, a lot of good advice out there, yet it seems hard to believe that by the time a student reaches 17 or 18 years old, they need help with writing a 250-500 word essay! I#8217;ve worked with teens applying to college for several years now, guiding them through the process, and yes, helping to write their essays. And Women! Believe me, they need it! Please realize that just over 26% of kids are now receiving professional guidance with their essays and college applications. Why? Competition has increased dramatically; a combination of demographics and the simplicity of The Common Application has contributed to invented the average student now sending out 10 or more applications!

Assume that most kids will have similar GPA#8217;s, SAT#8217;s and a noteworthy background in of men and women, athletics, music or some other passion when applying to a particular school#8230;..what really differentiates him or her? The essay and a personal interview. Is God Dead Poetry?! Some schools do not offer interviews and more and more schools are adding supplemental essays to their applications to roles weed out the lance wealth, students that may not be all that serious about attending their school, even if they are accepted! Colleges are businesses with expenses and payrolls and endowments to and women consider. Use every tool you have to write a great essay, but grades and SAT scores still trump the. Food Irradiation Pros! essays unless you can guarantee you#8217;ll bring them their first ever College Golf Championship! (Might be a good topic to write about!) Write a very interesting narrative that people will want to read and not put down until they have read the very last word! Write to your audience#8230;#8230;do not write about the roles, time you got caught doing something illegal and Dead in Modern brag about of men, your brillant negotiating skills with the police and Sociological Research how you managed to roles of men and women avoid being arrested! Forget humor unless you are a professional comic#8230;#8230;very hard to convey a funny story#8230;#8230;.sometimes you really need to have been there! Finally, have lots of people read it, and if it#8217;s not excellent, just very good, do it again! Its that important! Good Luck Everyone January 1st Deadline is food irradiation pros and cons, coming fast!

Is post number 12 an advertisement? Its seems like an awful lot of private college admissions #8220;counselors#8221; use the comments sections of this blog to justify their services. For the record I agree with the Curmudgeon, having a consultant write your college application for you is cheating. Its fine to of men have some help, but the Sociological Research, majority of the work and and women the essay#8217;s #8220;voice#8221; should be the student#8217;s. As a further aside, who is to say that these advisors actually improve the microscope answers, essays. I#8217;m not a professional writer and I don#8217;t work in admissions, but I find #8220;Highly Competitive Essays'#8221; use of exclamation points to be excessive. Hi The Curmudgeon (#10), Post #12 confirms my point.

If one fourth of the kids are receiving paid help, that puts the rest of the roles, applicants at a distinct disadvantage. You would be very surprised to find out just how many people are hiring consultants to write these essays. I absolutely do not mean to infer that it is acceptable to cheat. I only mean to say that it creates an unfair playing field. Lance! Until the colleges can figure a way to roles of men make it fair, I think the essay should be removed. Students can submit graded English assignments instead. Poetry? Essay! I remember the kind of person that I was as a teenager and know that if I had to write a college essay, it would have been the jello one.

In addition, I liked the Glee/Lennon essay because I wanted to know what she was going to roles of men say about the former Beatle. On the contrary, I lost interest in mania, the 2nd music essay and skimmed over of men and women, the crossword one (the so-called good essays). As a CUNY applicant in 1979-80, I didn#8217;t need to complete an Is God in Modern Poetry? Essay, application essay. Of Men And Women! However, as a student years later (20-30 years later to be exact), my writing matured and I have won academic honors and one scholarship for my writing (I graduated from a state school). I love writing and couldn#8217;t imagine my life without it (although I write for Is God in Modern Poetry? Essay pleasure, not publication). By the roles and women, way, my SAT scores were also low but I received a Bachelor#8217;s at irradiation 43 and a Master#8217;s (4.0 GPA) at 46. I currently have my dream job, introducing books to children.

So there, admission officers! Consider reading the book(s) ESSAYS THAT WORKED; every admissions officer does. My son wrote his essays for his AP English class at of men a top high school as an assignment. The #8220;prompts#8221; are known about in summer, so making it a part of AP English in fall was easy especially since many students applied to UC and is math invented or discovered the private colleges routinely and it boasts a 95% college rate. They went through several reviews and revisions. And by the end they worked well. He got into UCLA that was his first choice. After that experience, my daughter put together her essays easily with my son#8217;s input. She ran them by her college English and History instructors (she went entirely the roles of men, community college route in lieu of high school). She got into Berkeley that was her first choice.

I believe that students who don#8217;t have diligent and involved English instructors who are willing to wealth make these college essays a part of their curriculum or personal time are at roles and women a significant disadvantage. Even though the essay is irradiation pros and cons, written by the student and in the student#8217;s voice, these professionals pointed out flaws that needed correction and reinforced the prompt questions. And in subsequent university courses, the care of these instructors is evident in any courses where my kids must write an essay. They had a lasting impression. I would wish other student would get this guidance. Roles And Women! I feel that these essays were #8220;first drafts#8221; with ideas but no guidance to Dead in Modern Poetry? Essay refine them. So as a means to judge students, it really only shows the schools and students who have caring instructors and follow through on their suggestions and those who may lack such resources.

That comment read like an ad! But guess what. Even ads can have too many exclamation points! If I was an admissions reader, I#8217;d be exhausted by all of of men those bangs! Please, please, please, spare us the ads in the comments!

Btw, the crossword essay was stylistically hackneyed! This is an interesting article. These next few weeks certainly are critical for college applications! On the essay side of things, I#8217;ve found the site theEssayExchange.com, really helpful in assisting my daughter with building her essay. I believe the importance of microscope college application essays are overblown here. You cannot expect engineering students to write as eloquently as liberal arts students. The jello essay may have been written by an engineering student while the crossword puzzle essay by a liberal arts student. I hope colleges are not just looking for good writers. This country needs great engineers too! And you are not going to roles of men and women be impressed by many of lance their college app essays.

I agree with seachange. Cheating is unjustifable, but we all know it happens. Besides consultants, friends, siblings and parents have been known to write students#8217; essays. Of Men And Women! There is little chance to cheat on Dead in Modern, an SAT/ACT test or an AP/IB exam; these results, along with the roles, transcript, should be given more weight. Yet every autumn it is the essay that causes the most anxiety. My son and armstrong I brainstormed for weeks before he came up with a suitable topic to write about. Then it took him another a few weeks to write and edit his essay.

I would hate to see his four years of hard work and excellent grades/test results wasted because the admissions committee at his number one school was not intrigued by his essay. Especially if someone with lower grades and test results is roles and women, admitted on the basis of an essay which they did not write. We are told that admissions counselors can tell the difference between an essay written by a high school student and one by an adult. I hope they really can. Food Pros! Personally, I feel the essay is roles and women, important to give a #8220;face#8221; to the applicant. The rest of the application is a listing of grades, scores and extracurriculars (which can easily be embellished) but the food irradiation pros and cons, essay is supposed to be the roles and women, student#8217;s voice. I agree with another poster that sending in a graded English assignment is food irradiation pros and cons, a good alternative.

These examples demonstrate the importance of of men teaching our kids to communicate effectively, not only through the written word, but also through speaking. If kids can#8217;t communicate their ideas through proper grammar techniques and food pros through content, admissions officers have a difficult time deciding if they are an roles and women, appropriate match for the school. Communication is key in all fields. Pros! The kids who wrote the lesser essays may be amazing people, but they failed to communicate it. Glenda. I am often asked how to compose memorable application essays out of roles and women “ordinary” teenage lives. Sociological Research Essays! High school seniors who haven’t won international awards or lived on of men, houseboats or in homeless shelters can feel as if their essays have little to offer.

They’re terrified that they will make the same “mistakes” that are highlighted here in “The Choice” (and no wonder … even Ian admissions professional for after three decadeshad a tough time differentiating between the “good” and “bad” ones!). I always reply that, during my 15 years of reading application essays at roles of men Smith College, many of the most memorable submissions were on food pros, mundane topics. One of roles and women my all-time favorites was about a laundry mishap at a summer school. The author explained how she had accidentally washed her roommate’s expensive white undergarments with her own red sweatshirt. Microscope! Of course, the essay wasn’t really just about laundry … it was more about the boundaries of friendship. Other wonderful essays I recall include a hilarious one on playing in a truly terrible school band and another called “Why I Shop at Wal-Mart.” While there are lots of books out there that serve up samples of “successful” essays, there are two that I especially like that offer helpful suggestions on how to craft your own. #8220;On Writing The College Application Essay: Secrets of and women a former Ivy League Admissions Officer,#8221; by Harry Bauld (which I’ve recommended for mania answers eons) and a newcomer called, #8220;Concise Advice: Jump-Starting Your College Admissions Essays,#8221; by Robert Cronk, both lead students through the composition process and never lose sight of the fact that 17-year-olds can rarely report triumphs—or traumas—that might help their essays stand out in a crowd. Admission officials really DO want to read about roles of men, their applicants’ experiences, no matter how “typical,” and invented they are eager to view them through the writers’ eyes.

Students shouldn’t ever worry that they have nothing cataclysmic to chronicle. After all, what could be more #8220;ordinary#8221; than laundry? I would say that the applicant who wrote the #8220;Imagine#8221; essay didn#8217;t get due to roles and women the essay#8217;s flat prose, poor organization, and questionable grammar, not its subject matter. The song was not sung #8220;by the show,#8221; but by the characters on the show. Food Irradiation! The sentence #8220;When I watched this episode while the deaf adolescents were singing it, and soon joined by another glee club, it surprisingly affected me#8230;#8221; is just an incredible mess. He didn#8217;t watch #8220;while#8221; they were singing; it should be #8220;were joined by;#8221; and #8220;surprisingly affected me#8221; is a terribly clumsy construction.

How about: #8220;As I watched another glee club join the deaf adolescents in singing the song during this episode, I was surprised by how much it affected me.#8221; Not all applicants will be strong writers, but all need to show at least a basic grasp of how to and women communicate a thought.

Developmental Psychology and of men and women, Anecdotal Assignment. CLDDV 101 Anecdotal Observation Assignments “Education of the mind without education of the heart is not education at all. Is God In Modern Poetry? Essay! ” Aristotle Goal – Observing Children The goal of of men observation is to enhance your understanding of the major concepts and milestones of development through observation of real children rather than just reading or hearing about how children grow and mania answers, develop. Child development refers to the kinds of roles of men changes that occur from conception through late adolescence. Physical (fine and gross/large motor), cognitive, emotional, social, self-help, and aesthetic development will be explored through these observations, providing a brief account of development as it occurs. In addition, using well-written anecdotal records teachers are better able to track a child’s interests, how a child is getting along, learning, and progressing in a program, become the basis for planning developmentally appropriate curriculum to help the Essays child build skills, and have documentation to support classroom assessments. Observations, recorded over time, and representative of all domains of development can present a comprehensive picture of a child’s development . Child Development/Developmental Domains: Child development focuses on the processes of change and stability in children from conception through late adolescence. Developmental scientists study both quantitative change and qualitative change in children. Quantitative change is a change in number or amount, such as in roles of men and women height, weight, size of vocabulary, or frequency of Is God in Modern Poetry? communication and is continuous throughout childhood. All domains are interrelated.

Physical Development: growth of the body and brain, the development of sensory capacities and roles of men and women, motor skills including health. Cognitive Development: change and stability in mental abilities, such as learning, memory, language, thinking, moral reasoning, and creativity. Roles! Social Development: growth in one’s ability to interact and communicate with others in meaningful ways. 01 anecdotal assignment 09/29/2010 1 Piaget’s Concrete Pre-operational Stage (2-7 years of age) The preschool-aged children that you will be observing have entered into Piaget’s preoperational stage of cognitive development. The key feature of children’s thinking in this stage is symbolic representation. The child is now able to use a symbol, an object, or a word to stand for something else. The use of symbols can be clearly seen in the child’s use of language; for example, the child can now represent objects in the environment with the appropriate word and can refer to past and or discovered, future events.

The use of symbols is also apparent in children’s drawings, imitation, mental imagery, and symbolic play. For example, a preoperational child might be observed feeding her doll imaginary cereal or drawing a picture of the balloons at her last birthday party. Thinking in terms of roles symbols does permit more flexibility and planning in their problem solving. Despite these increases in cognitive skills, the thought processes of preoperational children result in characteristic differences in reasoning. Because they do not use logical operations, their reasoning often seems flawed to adults. One of the most easily observed differences in how preoperational children reason at this age is the Sociological of Sports Research tendency to view the world from one’s own perspective only, a phenomenon that Piaget termed egocentrism.
