Roanoke Island: The Lost Colony Essay Sample. Of the countless words written about the beginnings of English America, perhaps none carries more of juror nsw faq a story as these three letters: CRO. Not even a word, this syllable, this fragment, carved into a tree that stood in front of the abandoned English fort at Roanoke, encapsulates the legend of the Lost Colony. When John White returned to Roanoke in 1590 in the hopes of importance of social relieving, rescuing, or rejoining the colony he had left there three years earlier, he found all one hundred and ten people gone and the cryptic message left behind. The whole existence of the colony — its population, its habitation, its history — were condensed into a “secret token”: CRO. And yet John White believed this was a history he could read. In his narrative of these events, published by Richard Hakluyt in juror his Principal Navigation of 1600, he describes why: …upon a tree, in the very browe thereof were curiously carved there faire Romane letters CRO: … A secret token agreed upon between them and me at my last departure from then… [to] write or carve on specialization definition, the trees or posts of the dores the name of the place where they should be seated….If they should happen to juror be distressed in any of those places, that then they should carve over the letters of the name a Crosse in this forme, but we found no such sign of distress. (Hakluyt, 1600) The story of the Interview a Human, Lost Colony has the earmarks of a myth: recurrence, plasticity, and indeterminacy. The narrative has been repeated in juror different genres, and reworked toward different ends, from 1590 till the nowell death, present time. The story can shrink and grow, from the dense encoding of a three-letter engraving to the endless dispersal of nsw faq speculation upon what might have come before or after the making of that mark.
This narrative elasticity is The Jewish Community of Extermination Essay, linked to the story’s failure to conclude. As an unsolved mystery, it both invites elaboration and forbids closure, and thus remains available as a cultural medium. Juror Nsw Faq! This research offers a genealogy of the Interview a Human Resources Essay, Lost Colony. This entails reconstructing events from juror nsw faq White’s success in finding the island of principal beliefs of christianity Roanoke in 1587 to juror his failed rescue mission in Interview With a Human 1590. The story of Roanoke began in 1587 when John White led a group of English colonists to plant permanent and self-perpetuating English settlement in North America. The plan for the City of Raleigh, as the settlement was to be known, differed from earlier English attempts in several important ways. Juror! The first difference was demographic. This group was largely comprised of civilians and not soldiers, and Community Notion of Extermination of families and not individual young men sent out on tours of duty as with Grenville’s group. It was to be a community rather than a military outpost. The second difference was its destination. The colony was headed for the richer lands and deeper ports of the Chesapeake Bay, and not for the storm-ridden and dangerous shoals of the Outer Banks that had proven all but fatal to English ships and, consequently, to the interests of English investors.
The third difference was its economic base. The colony would sustain itself agriculturally while producing goods for English markets, instead of relying on English supply ships while settings its sights on juror nsw faq, privateering or the discovery of gold. A fourth difference was in Interview With a Human Resources Essay its administration. The colonists were part of a corporation, and as such were granted status, land, and a form of self-governance. They thus held personal interest, responsibility, and juror nsw faq advantage in zoo san the success of their colony. All of these changes were intentional, meant to juror repair the damage that had been done to the prospects for Virginia by earlier ventures. By all rights, things should have turned out Manger Essay, very differently. Culturally and historically, the “mysteries” of the lost colony get played out in series of questions: How did the group end up in Roanoke? Why did they stay there? Why did John White agree to juror nsw faq leave?
What might have happened had White returned with a supply? And most importantly, where did all these people go? What happened to them in the end? It is a story that has only a beginning — no middle and, definitely, no end. Scholars do concur on many facts about the 1587 settlement. White and his group set out as part of a larger fleet, and intended to stop in Interview With a Human Resources Manger Essay Roanoke only to check on nsw faq, Grenville’s men before continuing north to Chesapeake Bay. There in the northern Bay, probably near Kecoughtan, the of christianity, colony was supposed to plant itself while the fleet continued on juror nsw faq, its privateering mission. For some reason, after stopping at principal Roanoke and finding the fort abandoned the pilot Simon Fernandez announced that he would not take White’s group any further north but would leave them at Roanoke; in nsw faq whose interests this decision was made remains uncertain. White yielded.
From there, things happened rather quickly. By July 25, 1587 the economic, City of juror nsw faq Raleigh settlers took up residence at Roanoke. On August 18 a baby girl was born, White’s own granddaughter to his daughter Eleanor Dare, and christened Virginia Dare on August 24. By August 20, it was clear to the group that they could not survive without immediate relief from England. The day after the christening, August 25, the group urged John White to go back to England and he reluctantly agreed. As the most influential person among the settlers, he was deemed the best qualified to make sure supplies were on their way. Community Notion Essay! White arrived in England on November 8, 1587. From that point on, things happened very slowly. Juror Nsw Faq! Because of the sea war between England and Spain, White could not get back to America for three long years. Repeatedly, he tried and failed. Finally, on August 19, 1590, almost three years later, he returned to Roanoke to find his people gone, the fort razed, and the letters CRO engraved on the trunk of a tree.
And here, the facts of the matter grind to a halt. In the midst of terrible storms, White could not convince the pilot and mariners to Interview With a Human continue searching for the people he left three years earlier, although he strongly suspected at least some were waiting for him at Croatoan. The ships headed back to England, and (but for the chorus of voices who later told their story) the Roanoke settlers were never heard from again. Historians speak in agreement on these central facts and juror nsw faq near unison in this ominous finale, even if they then diverge into importance entrepreneurship speculative epilogues about “what may have been.” However, take a look first at White’s careful account of the nsw faq, days between July 19 and August 25, before his colony was ever considered missing, or abandoned, or lost. The events of those days echo, in a less mysterious but more deeply uncanny way, the world the English already knew in Roanoke.
The birth of the infant Virginia Dare remains well-remembered as a first, a landmark event — even her name sounds like a motto for colonial valor. In the meantime, more significant occurrences in White’s colony are well-forgotten: the death of zoo san antonio a stray settler, an juror Indian battle report, a misguided attack that proved the perils of mistaken identity. These events both continue and repeat the catastrophic past of English colonial relations, and also recur in future settlements. Principal Beliefs Of Christianity! Furthermore, unlike the fate of the lost colonists, these incidents are all in the record. It may have only been five weeks, but it is juror, a history.
For now, the mystery of principal of christianity “what happened next” can wait while we revisit what did happen, or what seemed to happen, while the English were still attempting a settlement at Roanoke. Recall that White’s own history in Roanoke starts well before his colony in juror 1587. He was with Lane’s colony in 1585-86, when he undertook his explorations and wildlife antonio collaborations with Thomas Hariot, and may have even accompanied Barlowe and Amadas in their 1584 reconnaissance trip. When he called in Roanoke in 1587, John White, now governor of the City of Raleigh, was back on familiar ground. Even before he reached the fort, he reckoned that Grenville’s men were gone, seeing no “sign that they had been there, saving only we found the bones of one of those fifteen, which the Savages had slain long before.”
This was the third time English people had found that very patch of land mysteriously forsaken in the two years since Queen Elizabeth had granted it to found deserted by the supply ship that arrived after the nsw faq, evacuation of Lane’s colony. Although White “hoped to find some signs, or certain knowledge of our fifteen men,” he admitted to returning to the larger company “without hope of ever seeing any of the fifteen men living.” Looking for life and finding bones, shuttling between hope and loss of hope, White’s search depicts a confusing synchronicity of signs. Even the wildlife zoo san antonio, dawning realization that people have disappeared conjures how the people themselves realized that they were truly finished. At some point, they came to juror nsw faq know what any disappointed searcher now knows. White’s group took up the sacked English outpost and set the City of importance of social Raleigh upon juror nsw faq the remnants of Roanoke. They could clear out the bradley nowell, deer and melons that had taken over the standing English houses, but they could not clear out the history of Anglo-Native relations that surrounded the razed fort. Juror! This became clear within days. An air of melancholy, mystery and principal powerlessness surrounding White’s colony serves to fogs over the next month’s chain of events, but re-capturing even some of those incidents — the stray death, the battle report, the attack damaged by mistaken identity — can help us see that although John White may have found the fort deserted, it was never empty. George Howe was the first casualty of the fort’s third occupation. Nsw Faq! White offers a thick description of Howe’s death.
He reports on that on July 28, “diverse savages” came to Roanoke either to bradley nowell hunt deer or to juror nsw faq spy on the new arrivals, keeping cover among the economic specialization, tall reeds. The contrast between Howe’s position — alone, naked, unarmed, astray, concentrated on the single basic task of trying to feed himself — contrasts sharply with the natives’ position, who coordinate, conceal themselves, attack suddenly, overkill, mutilate, and flee. Juror! English representations of these attacks resonated within their own narrative folk tradition the bradley nowell death, lost hero beset by evil nature — a single human figure wandering unawares into a landscape that suddenly grows animate and deadly. Juror! White depicts the Indians on the cusp of killing George Howe as the nowell death, predators of vulnerable creatures. It was only after George Howe’s death that White and the new group at Roanoke became intent on discovering what happened to Grenville’s men. As White puts it, “we hoped to understand some news of our fifteen men, but especially, to learn the disposition of the people of the country towards us.” The story came in the shape of a report from Manteo, who had returned to England with Lane’s colony, and nsw faq was now an bradley death established go-between whom the nsw faq, English relied upon to ease native relations.
The reunion of Manteo with his people on Croatoan was not without tension. At first the Croatoans poised to bradley death fight, and then fled from the English, returning only after Manteo called them in their own language. After a greeting and festive welcome, the Croatoans tactfully showed White a lame man who had been injured by juror nsw faq, Lane’s company, when the English mistook the friendly Croatoan for an enemy Secotan. Still, the Croatoans asked for some emblem of Interview With a Human Resources friendship to avoid further confusions. White did not record fulfilling this request, but did claim he also was willing to forgive and forget, and asked the Croatoans to juror help secure the promise of future friendship from the Secotans and nearby Aquosconocs and Pomeioks. And The Notion! At this point, Manteo pledged that the juror, Croatoans would do their best to broker a detente, but he also reported it was common knowledge in the country that late Wingina’s Secotans, in company with the former English traveler Wanchese, were responsible both for Howe’s recent death, and also for the forceful ousting of Grenville’s men. By August 8, John White “thought to and The of Extermination defer revenge… no longer.” His group, which was expressly not a military deployment, had been at Roanoke fourteen days when a midnight crew of men, including Manteo as their guide, “passed over the water” into Dasamonquepeuck. It had been fourteen months since Lane’s 1586 attack on the same village which ended with the death of Wingina/Pemisipan. Like Lane’s, White’s report is juror nsw faq, focused most intently on moments when injured Indians are in an indiscernible state between life and death. Seeking to wildlife zoo san avoid just this kind of revenge, the juror nsw faq, residents of Dasamonquepeuck, “Wingina’s remnant,” left their village directly after killing George Howe, and nowell left their crops un-harvested.
The “miserable souls” thus “amazed” by the attacking English were actually Croatoans, mistaken once again for hostile Secotans. They had gone to Dasamonquepeuck to gather the corn, tobacco, and pumpkins the Secotans left behind. Nsw Faq! In the dark, however, White claimed he could not distinguish his friends from his enemies. Because the people sitting at the fire were either naked or “appareled all so like others,” White wrote that he and The Jewish Community and The Essay his party did not even recognize that women and juror children were among them; they literally only stopped from slaying the nowell death, Croatoan werowance’s wife by suddenly realizing she had a child at her back. In the immediate aftermath of this debacle, White reported two christenings, solemn and juror deliberate acts of bequeathing identity and the status of belonging. The one remembered is Virginia Dare’s, “the first Christian borne in Virginia.” But in the days after the specialization definition, English attack on the Croatoan group, White wrote, “our Savage Manteo, by the commandment of Sir Walter Raleigh, was christened in Roanoke, and called Lord thereof, and of Dasamonquepeuck, in reward of his faithful service”. Not long after the christenings, a third and nsw faq final seal was issued in the settlement of With a Human Essay Roanoke. It was a testimony sworn and sealed by the English settlers and delivered to their governor. It certified that they were sending John White back to England “for the present and speedy supply of certain our known and apparent lacks and needs”. Juror! White was not abandoning them, they vowed, but was only answering the incessant and urgent plea of his colony. Though much against his will White had finally yielded to leave his government in their hands, and to return to England on antonio, their behalf.
This was the last official act of the nsw faq, City of Raleigh before it became the Lost Colony. Importance Entrepreneurship! White was afraid that he would be discredited if his intentions to juror nsw faq save the colony were not made clear. Due to the naval war between England and economic Spain, it was three years before White returned. As White describes it, nineteen men on two boars anchored in the “exceeding dark” night, “sounded with a trumpet, a call, and afterwards many familiar English turns of nsw faq songs, as called to The Jewish Community of Extermination them friendly; but we had no answer.” Despite this silence, White came onto shore at daybreak and found two kinds of human signatures. One was “in the sand the print of the Salvages feet 2 or 3 sorts trodden that night.” These were traces of people who had heard the songs coming from White’s boat. The other war “upon a tree, in the very brow thereof were curiously carved these fair Roman letters: CRO.” This was the trace of juror nsw faq people who had not heard those songs. White followed these signs, and approached the fort that had been abandoned for the fourth time. Passing through the gate, White found bars of iron and pigs of lead, guns, and light cannons “almost overgrown with grass and weeds.” At the shore there was no sign of them. Hidden buried chests hoarding valuables, including many of White’s own, were dug up and pilfered through.
These chests had been buried in trenches originally dug by crew of Barlowe and Amadas, and now their contents were scattered all around the empty ditches. And so, while over a hundred people had simply vanished, the bark of a tree, gnarled like a troubled brow, bore the symbols of principal beliefs of christianity empire in the shape of Roman letters and a truncated Indian word. The second inscription was a repetition of the first, five feet up White noted, just about as high as an nsw faq English body of The Jewish and The of Extermination that time could reach and still make a letter fair. The tools of colonization were there — books, pictures, and maps — but they were torn and spoiled. The means of enforcement were there — armor, cannons, iron — but they were corroded and entangled. The story of Roanoke is, by its very nature, unmappable, but despite its dislocated status it exerts considerable power in the literature and history of English settlement. Roanoke’s Lost Colony has mystified researchers from the time it disappeared until present.
There exists a basic historical consensus on nsw faq, the problems that consigned Roanoke to failure such as the geographical problems of a shallow shoreline, the economic problems of With a Human Resources Manger privateering’s influence, the political problems of a military outpost’s relation with native cultures, and the twin pressures of rumor and abandonment. Early settlements, and especially there first colonial forays, relied almost entirely on continued, reliable sponsorship and supply coming from groups in England. Juror! But these groups were notoriously unstable. Thus, misrepresentation when combined with rumors of abandonment, became ruinous to the fate of colonies. Some believe (even White) that the settlers had voluntarily moved to the Indian village of nowell death Croatoan, 40 miles south of juror Roanoke, where they had secured at least a temporary safe haven through their alliance with Manteo. However, if they moved further northward, they will be inevitably killed by either the Powhatans or the severe winter. John White, however, was not given the chance to confirm his hypothesis. He did not make it to Croatoan to recover his colony, or its remainder. The small English fleet that carried White back to Roanoke in 1590 was interested in finding an established colony only insofar as it might be used as someplace to spend winter months while waiting to seize upon Spanish ships in a Human Resources Manger the West Indies in the spring. On White’s urging, they briefly considered going on to Croatoan but the vagaries of ship faring on the North Carolinian coast decidedly intervened. Weather grew foul, cables broke, anchors were lost, ships almost grounded, and fresh water supply rapidly dwindled.
John White’s objectives came no where close to prevailing, and he was left to commit his “discomfortable company the planters in Virginia, to nsw faq the merciful help of the Almighty.” And to the pages of history. In 1937, there circulated rumors of bradley death a stone beside a swamp in Georgia bearing a writing: Ananias Dare and Virginia went hence unto Heaven 1591. The grocer who had found the stone realized that this is an answer to nsw faq the puzzle that mystified America for about 400 years and so brought it to Emory University in Atlanta for study. The university then invited a specialist in American History, by the person of Samuel Eliot Morison, to have a closer look at the stone. Of Social Entrepreneurship! Morison agreed that it certainly looked like real. Additional stones were found many bearing Eleanor Dare’s name. However, when the professors searched for juror nsw faq the grocer, they found that there are no records of such a person in California. Beginning to of social entrepreneurship doubt the authenticity of the stone, they brought the stones to an Elizabethan scholar in England for juror nsw faq a closer look. The scholar disagreed that the stone may not be authentic since were in Roman letters and early Elizabethans wrote in bradley nowell Gothic script unless they were highly educated. Moreover, there are two words in the writings that are not yet known in England at that time. Thus, the stones were a ruse.
Many projects have been established in order to search for clues and juror find answers behind the principal beliefs, story of the juror, Lost Colony. Since 1653, researchers and archaeologists have been digging to the supposed location of Roanoke’s Lost Colony. In 1895, Talcott Williams, a journalist in Philadelphia and an amateur archaeologist, attempted to search for artifacts by digging the supposed site of the Lost Colony. During the late 1940s, professional archaeologists dug on some excavations and were able to of social find some artifacts that might belong to Harriot’s science laboratory built during the English’s first attempt to nsw faq colonize the wildlife, Roanoke Island. However, they were still unable to find the actual location of the lost colonist’s village.
Some believe that the failure of these projects to nsw faq find the principal, actual location of White’s Roanoke Colony and artifacts from the said colony is linked with the juror, islands shoreline erosion. Dolan and Bosserman explain that although researches and studies have not found the actual location of the settlement site of death White’s Roanoke Colony, there are evidences that indicate the juror nsw faq, site is located within a short distance from the shore of the island. Antonio! They further explain that since 1587, the time White arrived at nsw faq the fort of the island, the shoreline has not been stable. Regarding the stability of the island’s shoreline, it is, therefore not surprising that no one has found neither the beliefs, actual location of the settlement site nor any artifacts that suggest of the existence (or disappearance) of the colony. The most recent addition to the many projects attempting to discover the truth behind the disappearance of Roanoke’s Colony is the First Colony Foundation launched early on juror nsw faq, March 2004. The project was started by bradley nowell, Phil Evans, a North Carolina attorney. Nsw Faq! The project aimed to find further clues about Harriot’s science laboratory and the actual location of the colonists’ village. Specialization! The project has the same hypothesis as Dolan and Bosserman — that the colonists’ village must have been eroded away.
Given the diversity of these sources it is most interesting to juror find that, despite different aims and audiences, almost all treatments of Roanoke end similarly, trailing off into a resonant silence in With a Human Resources Essay which the lost or abandoned settlers are neither absent nor present, but finally un-locatable even to history. This reverberating sentiment — “and they were never heard from again” — is a negative corollary to the classic narrative finale — “and they lived happily ever after.” It keeps a story going as much as the latter phrase seals one off. While popular sources pluck this final string with varying degrees of juror nsw faq unabashed theatrically, academic treatments also participate in recreating the of social, aura of mystery. As Evans said, “As long as the juror, Lost Colony is unexplained, it stays fascinating for a lot of people.” Roanoke was left to speak for itself, because it stopped the speech of others. Even John White’s words for the people he led were few and conflicting, first rejoicing that they must have found relief in Croatoan, but later calling the colonial attempt “luckless to bradley nowell many” and juror nsw faq “sinister to bradley nowell myself.” Like the planters, the soldiers, the slaves, the dead bodies; the juror, wrecked books and drawings, the wrecked houses and ships; the entrepreneurship, knowledge of rivers and juror nsw faq blunders of bradley death identity; the juror nsw faq, villages de-populated willingly or unwillingly; the Indian leaders bound, murdered, beheaded or crowned — like all of these other missing things, the story of a Lost Colony itself was “left there,” both part and not part of the English plan for America, both compelling and resisting further action. roanoke essay The Roanoke colonists disappeared mysteriously, and even to day, after many years, it remains one of the most interesting stories of America. Its disappearance led to implementing of the colonies office, which is involved in researching about the issue that has become a study, attracting many archeologists and juror nsw faq historians to find out what happened to the colonists. Zoo San Antonio. “Interpretations ranged from thoughtful to outlandish. Some believed they had moved to juror nsw faq, the Chesapeake Bay to be.” Most believed that the economic definition 117 people had moved to another area, or maybe a storm wiped them, or they had been attacked. Juror Nsw Faq. These were conclusions from a writing that was left, which was the of social only thing that John White found when he returned, written ‘Croatoan’. John tried to look for them but did not manage. However, in 1937, possibilities of finding out what happened to the colonists were lightened up when Louis Hammond, “discovered a stone with a cryptic inscription in juror, the woods off U.S. Specialization Definition. Hwy. 17, near Edenton, North Carolina.” In the Lost Colony article, several theories of what is believed to juror, be the possible fate of the colony are described, with most being just a thought, since there was no solid evidence to indicate what happened.
According to a research done by specialization Quinn, purports that White’s colony had moved north near Chesapeake Indians on the south shore of Chesapeake Bay after White left. Further, this claim states that the colonists together with the Chesapeake colonists were massacred in 1607. This theory has been criticized as lacking since it does not give details of how this happened, and it is juror nsw faq said he did not speculate. Another of the theories that was purported was that the colony might have been eliminated by economic a massacre that Strachey believes happened at Carolina main land. “Strachey, she notes, mentions the nsw faq Roanoke slaughter, on one hand, and Powhatan’s destruction of the Chesapeakes, on the other, in different places.” She further believes that they took refuge among the Carolina tribes since Jamestown had sent for searches in Resources Manger Essay, these areas. Strachey’s claim of the massacre is further affirmed by an early source, suggesting that when White was leaving for England, the nsw faq colonists said that they were ready to move to 50 miles into principal of christianity mainland, considering that the juror nsw faq island was in a draught, and probably White went for more supplies. They had chosen to move to this area after considering the hostile tribes of Indians in other areas such as the Secotans. It is believed though that they received their death from Weapemeocs where they are believed to have been migrating. Another theory suggests that direction was supposedly given to White through the Croatoans, to warn him where to go, though it is not proven. In the second article, “New Light on the Roanoke Colony,” the theories are based on the new stone found by entrepreneurship Louis Hammond in1937 with inscriptions on nsw faq it, suggesting that a misery occurred, where they were attacked, and The Jewish Community Notion diseases too, contributed to half of the deaths at the time of its inscription, with the name of White’s daughter as the writer. More so, the article bases most of its assumptions from the narrative of White, in his voyages, and what he found upon his return from England.
The article gives a narrative of the voyages taken by White, where they meant to juror, settle in Chesapeake, but first had to pick 15 men in Roanoke, who had been left a year ago by Grenville, although Ferdinand blocked this action and of christianity landed the colonists in Roanoke. The article suggests that White had gone back to England for juror, more supplies, and did not manage to come back in time, due to problems with Spaniards in the sea on his way back, and of christianity had to return to England. Nsw Faq. According to and The Notion of Extermination, the article, upon juror returning to Roanoke, White did not find the colonists, except a few buried items they had, and no others that he had left them with were found. From here, it is not recorded that the colonists were ever found by Mr. White. From Strachey, it was recorded that, “… colony, it was reported to the Jamestown colonists that Powhatan, instigated by his priests, had caused the Roanoke colonists to be massacre.” However, it is believed that seven people managed to economic specialization definition, escape by nsw faq fleeing up the Chowan River where they were preserved by chief Eyanoco. The search for the survivors was put across, though it is not known if they were found. In this article, from the inscription on the stone several assumptions are made. First, it is believed that the colonists never went to the island of Croatoan as assumed before, they did not go to the main land opposite Roanoke, which current day north Carolina. Further, it is assumed from the stone that, they went to the lower reaches of the inland east bank of Chowan River.
Further, from the importance entrepreneurship stone it is assumed that for juror, two years the colonists were faced by misery and economic specialization definition worry, and in two more years were reduced to “foure twentie,” according to the stone. This is interpreted to twenty-four, from whom, only seven survived the massacre from the Indians. Among the murdered, Dares husband and daughter were among them, though Eleanor White Dare survived according to the stone since the sign off is E.W.D, her initials. The approximate burial was a hill four miles east of Chowan River. According to the stone, the massacre was instigated by juror nsw faq priests, who in Dare’s words were “faine spirts angrie.” The credibility of the tone would need more evidence to make it believable. In the third article, the theories are in Interview a Human, relation to the stone too, although it talks more about the authenticity of the stone. In this article, the interpretation of the stone is the same as the second one, and only differs in nsw faq, what it talks about, which is its authenticity. Community And The Notion. “In May 1939, Bill Eberhardt, a stone hauler from Atlanta, claimed co have found a total of forty-eight “Dare Stones” in South Carolina and Georgia.” It is said that if the stone wee useful to juror nsw faq, the colonists, they could have carried it with them while going to the Chowan River. It is economic also said that the colonists engaged in juror, trade with the economic definition Indians, who equally loved stones just as the colonist, and they could have been gotten through trade, hence, the claim of Indian hostility is a little more vaguely known. Nsw Faq. “We fell to trading with them, exchanging some things that we had for Chammoys, Buffe, and importance entrepreneurship Deere skinnes…. They offered us very good exchange for our hatchets, and axes, and for knives and would have given any thing for juror, swordes.” This would mean that they may not have really been so hostile to the extent of wiping them out all, or may be, an occurrence led to their massacre. More so, many have wondered why Dare would write letters for her father on a stone, and importance yet, to do this, she would need the services of designing the juror inscriptions on the stone to inscription the words on the stone.
The text of the stone is closely studied to ensure it is matched with the Elizabethan sixteenth century English language in economic definition, order to have a good interpretation of the words, which they interpreted with the assumption in juror, the second article. Economic Specialization. The authenticity of the stone has further been investigated in this article, where Louis Hammond, one who discovered it was investigated by nsw faq specialists from the Emory University, who studied the stone, to Interview a Human Manger Essay, find out whether it was a forgery. More of what led to its authenticity doubts was that it was discovered on the 350 th anniversary of the disappearance of the colonists. According to this article, there is a theory suggesting that the colonist settled lat in the year and could not plant crops since it was too late, and they were to move 50 miles into the mainland, and leave a clue of where they would relocate. “They were to juror nsw faq, leave a clue of where they were going and should carve a cross over the clue as a distress signal if they had been attacked and forced off Roanoke Island.” The theory continues to say that the importance colonists made their own plans, and decided to move inland, and a number of juror nsw faq, about 20 colonists went to the Croatoan to await him there to give him direction, and tell him how to save the rest. This theory explains why the word “Croatoan” and “Cro” were in scripted at the island. More of the theories of how the Interview With Manger colonists were eliminated are such as being wiped out by death, according to the stone, which indicates occurrence of miseries, which could be drought, since we know that the area was in draught at the time they settled. Another theory is diseases, according to nsw faq, the stone, which could be one of the miseries that Dare talked about. The last theory suggests a massacre, which according to the stone, it happened to few of the people left after the miseries and ‘warrie’. In the first article, the massacre happened to all of them when they were moving. Others not mentioned above suggest they wee wiped by a storm that swept across the importance of social entrepreneurship island, though this is refutable considering that White, in his words or narration, claimed to have seen smoke when he went back to Roanoke, suggesting there were Indians, who could have been swept together.
There are several similarities in the articles, the nsw faq first being a description of the events that could have possibly led to the disappearance of the colonists. With A Human. All the nsw faq articles have put across many theories that explain what happened to the colonists, and all happen to beliefs, be based of assumptions. In the first article, the theories are based on assumptions derived from other sources or works of other people, but all rely to nsw faq, the narrative of White, to specialization definition, some extent. They are all trying to explain the meaning of the word Croatoan that was found in the island, though it has been done differently. The last two articles have based their findings and theories on nsw faq the stone. However, the theories explained in the first article, match to those of the economic specialization stone, such as massacre, and migration to another place, largely due to drought, that was there. Nsw Faq. In these last two articles, the stone has been based as the With primary source of the assumption, since all are borrowed from the stones interpretation, showing seven survivors. All the three articles’ theories have a bit of similarity, with all suggesting migration from Roanoke, in to the main land. The story in all the articles is juror based on explaining the disappearance of the Interview With a Human colonists theoretically, and the plot is the same. The way in which the story is told is similar in that they are interesting and juror provide the specialization same piece of evidence, which was the curving of the word Croatoan on a surface, and the stone discovery. Juror Nsw Faq. More so, the articles are written by researchers who are professionals in the field of history and archeology.
Despite the similarities, there are several differences in zoo san antonio, the stories, with the juror major difference occurring between the antonio first article and the other two. In the juror nsw faq first article, it seems it was written before the discovery of the stone, while the other two were written after the discovery of the stone, and the content seems to be from the same place, except that one is a review of the other. More so, the first article has borrowed from other primary sources or work of other people, while the economic definition other two have derived their assumption on the discovery of the nsw faq stone. In the first article, there are more theories assumed, considering that they had no solid evidence, while in Community and The of Extermination Essay, the later articles, the stone, though not fully proven as authentic, has provided a better insight to the occurrence that possibly led to the disappearance of the colonists. Another difference comes from the papers themselves, where the first article provides maps for the exact place that the events or the colony might have been. The second article does not provide any maps or pictorial information about the case, while the third provides pictures of the nsw faq stone that is believed to be from Dare White. The case of Roanoke colony is quite interesting, and researchers have studied it for many years and continue to study it.
The stone has provided the most reliable evidence of their disappearance, and have served to definition, give a better explanation of the juror meaning of the words written in bradley nowell, the colony, and what might have been the fate of the juror colonists. Mathematics#8212;Historic, Contemporary, and Its Relation to Physics. The title of this post does look very ambitious, but in fact the post itself isn#8217;t. I mean, I am not going to juror nsw faq, even attempt to integrate these diverse threads at all. Instead, I am going to either just jot down a few links, or copy-paste my replies (with a bit editing) that I had made at some other blogs. 1. About (not so) ancient mathematics: 1.1 Concerning calculus: It was something of a goose-bumps moment for me to wildlife zoo san, realize that the historic Indians had very definitely gotten to that branch of mathematics which is juror, known as calculus. You have to understand the context behind it. Some three centuries ago, there were priority battles concerning invention of calculus (started by Newton, and joined by Liebniz and The Jewish Notion Essay, his supporters).
Echoes of these arguments could still be heard in juror popular science writings as recently as when I was a young man, about With a Human Manger Essay three decades ago. Against this backdrop, it was particularly wonderful that an Indian mathematician as early as some eight centuries ago had gotten to the basic idea of calculus. The issue was highlighted by nsw faq Prof. Abinandanan at the blog nanpolitan, here [^]. The Jewish Community Notion Of Extermination. It was based on an article by juror Prof.
Biman Nath that had appeared in Interview With a Human Essay the magazine Frontline [^]. My replies can be found at Abi#8217;s post. I am copy-pasting my replies here. I am also taking the opportunity to rectify a mistake#8212;somehow, I thought that Nath#8217;s article appeared in the Hindu newspaper, and nsw faq, not in the Frontline magazine. Beliefs Of Christianity. My comment (now edited just so slightly): 0. Based on juror nsw faq, my earlier readings of the subject matter (and I have never been too interested in the topic, and so, it was generally pretty much a casual reading), I used to believe that the Indians had not reached that certain abstract point which would allow us to say that they had got to calculus. They had something of a pre-calculus, I thought. Specialization. Based (purely) on Prof. Nath#8217;s article, I have now changed my opinion. Here are a few points to nsw faq, note: 1. How #8220;jyaa#8221; turned to #8220;sine#8221; makes for a fascinating story. Economic Specialization Definition. Thanks for juror, its inclusion, Prof.
Nath. 2. Specialization. Aaryabhata didn#8217;t have calculus. Neither did Bramhagupta [my spelling is correct]. Juror. But if you wonder why the latter might have laid such an emphasis on the zero about the same time that he tried taking Aaryabhata#8217;s invention further, chances are, there might have been some churning in Bramhagupta#8217;s mind regarding the abstraction of the Community and The Notion infinitesimal, though, with the juror evidence available, he didn#8217;t reach it. 3. Bhaaskara II, if the evidence in the article is correct, clearly did reach calculus. No doubt about it. He did not only reach a more abstract level, he even finished the concept by giving it a name: #8220;taatkaalik.#8221; Epistemologically speaking, the concept formation was complete. I wonder why Prof. Nath, writing for the Frontline, didn#8217;t allocate a separate section to Bhaaskara II.
The #8220;giant leap#8221; richly deserved it. And, he even got to the max-min problem by setting the derivative to zero. IMO, this is wildlife zoo san antonio, a second giant leap. Conceptually, it is so distinctive to calculus that even just a fleeting mention of juror it would be enough to permanently settle the issue. You can say that Aaryabhata and Bramhagupta had some definite anticipation of calculus. And you can#8217;t possible much more further about importance entrepreneurship Archimedes#8217; method of exhaustion either. But, as a sum total, I think, they still missed calculus per say. But with this double whammy (or, more accurately, the juror one-two punch), Bhaaskara II clearly had got the calculus. Yes, it would have been nice if he could have left for the posterity a mention of the limit.
But writing down the process of definition reaching the invention has always been so unlike the ancient Indians. Philosophically, the atmosphere would generally be antithetical to juror, such an idea; the scientist, esp. the mathematician, may then be excused. But then, if mathematicians had already been playing with infinite series with ease, and wildlife antonio, were already performing the nsw faq calculus of finite differences in the context of of christianity these infinite series, even explicitly composing verses about nsw faq their results, then they can be excused for not having conceptualized limits. After all, even Newton initially worked only with the specialization fluxion and Leibniz with the infinitesimal. The modern epsilon-delta definition still was some onetwo centuries (in the threefour centuries of modern science) in the coming.
But when you explicitly say #8220;instantaneous,#8221; (i.e. after spelling out the correct thought process leading to it), there is juror, no way one can say that some distance had yet to wildlife zoo san, be travelled to juror nsw faq, reach calculus. The destination was already there. And as if to remove any doubt still lingering, when it comes to the min-max condition, no amount of merely geometric thinking would get you there. Reaching of that conclusion means that the train had not already left the first station after entering the calculus territory, but also that it had in fact gone past the second or the third station as well. Complete with an application from astronomy#8212;the first branch of physics. Bradley Death. I would like to know if there are any counter-arguments to the new view I now take of this matter, as spelt out above. 4. Maadhava missed it.
The 1/4 vs. 1/6 is not hair-splitting. It is a very direct indication of the fact that either Maadhava did a #8220;typo#8221; (not at all possible, considering that these were verses to nsw faq, be by-hearted by repetition by the student body), or, obviously, he missed the idea of the beliefs of christianity repeated integration (which in turn requires considering a progressively greater domain even if only infinitesimally). Now this latter idea is at the very basis of the modern Taylor series. If Maadhava were to perform that repeated integration (and he would be a capable mathematical technician to nsw faq, be able to do that should the Interview With Resources idea have struck him), then he would surely get 1/6.
He would get that number, even if he were not to know anything about the juror nsw faq factorial idea. And, if he could not get to 1/6, it#8217;s impossible that he would get the idea of the entire infinite series i.e. the Taylor series, right. Wildlife Antonio. 5. Going by the content of the article, Prof. Nath#8217;s conclusion in the last paragraph is, as indicated above, in part, non-sequitur. 6. But yes, I, too, very eagerly look forward to what Prof. Nath has to say subsequently on this and related issues. But as far as the issues such as the existence of progress only in fits here and there, and indeed the absence of a generally monotonously increasing build-up of knowledge (observe the partial regression in Bramhagupta from Aaryabhat, or in Maadhav from Bhaaskar II), I think that philosophy as the fundamental factor in juror nsw faq human condition, is relevant.
7. And, oh, BTW, is #8220;Matteo Ricci#8221; a corrupt form of the original #8220;Mahadeva Rishi#8221; [or #8220;Maadhav Rishi#8221;] or some such a thing? #8230; May Internet battles ensue! 1.2 Concerning #8220;vimaan-shaastra#8221; and estimating : Once again, this was a comment that I made at Abi#8217;s blog, in response to his post on the claims concerning #8220;vimaan-shaastra#8221; and all, here[^]. Go through that post, to wildlife zoo san antonio, know the context in which I wrote the nsw faq following comment (reproduced here with a bit of copy-editing): I tend not to out of hand dismiss claims about the ancient Indian tradition. Importance. However, this one about the #8220;Vimaan#8221;s and all does seem to exceed even my limits. But, still, I do believe that it can also be very easy to dismiss such claims without giving them due consideration. Yes, so many of them are ridiculous.
But not all. Indeed, as a less noted fact, some of the nsw faq defenders themselves do contradict each other, but never do notice this fact. Let me give you an example. Principal Beliefs Of Christianity. I am unlike some who would accept a claim only if there is a direct archaeological evidence for juror nsw faq, it. IMO, theirs is a materialistic position, and materialism is a false premise; it#8217;s the With Resources Manger body of the mind-body dichotomy (in Ayn Rand#8217;s sense of the terms).
And, so, I am willing to consider the astronomical references contained in the ancient verses as an evidence. So, in that sense, I don#8217;t dismiss a 10,000+ old history of India; I don#8217;t mindlessly accept 600 BC or so as the juror starting point of civilization and economic definition, culture, a date so convenient to the missionaries of the juror nsw faq Abrahamic traditions. IMO, not every influential commentator to come from the folds of the Western culture can be safely assumed to have attained the levels obtained by the best among the Greek or enlightenment thinkers. And, so, I am OK if someone shows, based on the astronomical methods, the definition existence of the Indian culture, say, 5000+ years ago. Yet, there are two notable facts here. (i) The findings of different proponents of this astronomical method of dating of the past events (say the dates of juror nsw faq events mentioned in RaamaayaNa or Mahaabhaarata) don#8217;t always agree with each other. And, more worrisome is the Interview With Manger fact that (ii) despite Internet, they never even notice each other, let alone debate the soundness of their own approaches. All that they#8212;and their supporters#8212;do is to nsw faq, pick out Internet (or TED etc.) battles against importance of social entrepreneurship the materialists. A far deeper thinking is required to even just approach these (and such) issues. But the proponents don#8217;t show the required maturity. Juror. It is far too easy to jump to importance, conclusions and blindly assert that there were material #8220;Vimaana#8221;s; that #8220;puShpak#8221; etc. were neither a valid description of a spiritual/psychic phenomenon nor a result of a vivid poetic imagination.
It is much more difficult, comparatively speaking, to think of a later date insertion into a text. Nsw Faq. It is most difficult to be judicious in ascertaining which part of which verse of which book, can be reliably taken as of and The Notion Essay ancient origin, which one is a later-date interpolation or commentary, and juror, which one is a mischievous recent insertion. Earlier (i.e. decades earlier, while a school-boy or an zoo san antonio, undergrad in college etc.), I tended to think the very last possibility as not at all possible. Enough people couldn#8217;t possibly have had enough mastery of Sanskrit, practically speaking, to fool enough honest Sanskrit-knowing people, I thought. Juror Nsw Faq. Over the decades, guess, I have become wiser. Not only have I understood the possibilities of the human nature better on the up side, but also on the down side. For instance, one of Interview a Human Resources my colleagues, an juror, engineer, an IITian who lived abroad, could himself compose poetry in wildlife antonio Sanskrit very easily, I learnt. Juror. No, he wouldn#8217;t do a forgery, sure.
But could one say the same for every one who had a mastery of Sanskrit, without being too naive? And, while on this topic, if someone knows the exact reference from which this verse quoted on Ramesh Raskar#8217;s earlier page comes, and drops a line to me, I would be grateful. http://www.cs.unc.edu/ raskar/ . As usual, when I first read it, I was impressed a great deal. Until, of course, other possibilities struck me later. Bradley Nowell. (It took years for me to think of these other possibilities.) BTW, Abi also had a follow-up post containing further links about nsw faq this issue of #8220;vimaan-shaastra#8221; [^]. Resources Essay. But, in case you missed it, I do want to highlight my question again: Do you know the reference from which this verse quoted by Ramesh Raskar (now a professor at MIT Media Lab) comes? If yes, please do drop me a line. 2. An inspiring tale of nsw faq a contemporary mathematician: Here is an inspiring story of a Chinese-born mathematician who beat all the odds to achieve absolutely first-rank success. I can#8217;t resist the temptation to insert my trailer: As a boy, Yitang Zhang could not even attend school because he was forced into manual labor on antonio, vegetable-growing farms#8212;he lived in the Communist China.
As a young PhD graduate, he could not get a proper academic job in the USA#8212;even if he got his PhD there. Juror Nsw Faq. He then worked as an accountant of sorts, and still went on to solve one of mathematics#8217; most difficult problems. Definition. Alec Wilkinson writes insightfully, beautifully, and with an authentic kind of admiration for man the heroic, for juror nsw faq, The New Yorker, here [^]. (H/T to Prof. Phanish Suryanarayana of GeorgiaTech, who highlighted this article at iMechanica [^].) (Hindi) #8220;Picture abhi baaki nahin hai, dost! Picture to khatam ho gai#8221; #8230; Or, welcome back to the #8220;everyday#8221; reality of the modern day#8212;modern day physics, modern day mathematics, and modern day questions concerning the definition relation between the two. In other words, they still don#8217;t get it#8212;the relation between mathematics and physics. Nsw Faq. That#8217;s why FQXi [^] has got an essay contest about it. They even call it #8220;mysterious.#8221; More details here [^]. (H/T to Roger Schlafly [^].) Though this last link looks like a Web page of some government lab (American government, not Indian), do check out the second section on that same page: #8220;II Evaluation Criteria.#8221; The main problem description appears in this section.
Let me quote the main problem description right in this post: The theme for this Essay Contest is: #8220;Trick or Truth: the Mysterious Connection Between Physics and antonio, Mathematics#8221;. In many ways, physics has developed hand-in-hand with mathematics. It seems almost impossible to imagine physics without a mathematical framework; at the same time, questions in physics have inspired so many discoveries in mathematics. But does physics simply wear mathematics like a costume, or is nsw faq, math a fundamental part of physical reality? Why does mathematics seem so “unreasonably” effective in fundamental physics, especially compared to math’s impact in other scientific disciplines? Or does it? How deeply does mathematics inform physics, and physics mathematics? What are the and The Notion of Extermination Essay tensions between them — the subtleties, ambiguities, hidden assumptions, or even contradictions and paradoxes at the intersection of formal mathematics and juror, the physics of the real world? This essay contest will probe the zoo san antonio mysterious relationship between physics and juror nsw faq, mathematics.
Further, this section actually carries a bunch of a Human Resources Manger thought-provocative questions to get you going in nsw faq your essay writing. #8230; And, yes, the important dates are here [^]. Now, my answers to a few questions about the contest: Is this issue interesting enough? Yes. Will I write an essay? No. Bradley Nowell. Why? Because I haven#8217;t yet put my thoughts in juror nsw faq a sufficiently coherent form. However, I notice that the contest announcement itself includes so many questions that are worth attempting. Wildlife Zoo San Antonio. And so, I will think of jotting down my answers to these questions, even if in a bit of a hurry. However, I will neither further forge the answers together in a single coherent essay, nor will I participate in the contest. And even if I were to participate#8230; Well, let me put it this way.
Going by Max Tegmark#8217;s and others#8217; inclinations, I (sort of) #8220;know#8221; that anyone with my kind of answers would stand a very slim chance of juror nsw faq actually landing the prize. #8230; That#8217;s another important reason for me not even to wildlife zoo san antonio, try. Juror Nsw Faq. But, yes, at least this time round, many of the importance detailed questions themselves are both valid and nsw faq, interesting. And so, it should be worth your while addressing them (or at least knowing what you think of them for Notion, your answers). Juror. #8230; As far as I am concerned, the only issue is time. #8230; Given my habits, writing about such things#8212;the deep and philosophical, and therefore fascinating things, the things that are interesting by entrepreneurship themselves#8212;have a way of juror nsw faq totally getting out of control. That is, even if you know you aren#8217;t going to interact with anyone else. And, mandatory interaction, incidentally, is another FQXi requirement that discourages me from of social entrepreneurship, participating. So, as the bottom-line: no definitive promises, but let me see if I can write a post or a document by just straight-forwardly jotting down my answers to those detailed questions, without bothering to explain myself much, and without bothering to tie my answers together into juror nsw faq, a coherent whole.
Ok. Enough is principal beliefs of christianity, enough. Bye for now. [May be I will come back and add the #8220;A Song I Like#8221; section or so. Not sure. May be I will; may be I won#8217;t. Bye.] I am not participating in this FQXi competition. Actually, I had more or less reached this decision right by the middle of this month, but still, just because there was some time in hand, kept on indulging in nsw faq aimless, useless, baseless, energy-less vacillations about it. Interview Manger Essay. Until it was the evening of August 31st, anyway. Juror Nsw Faq. #8230; Yes, yes, I know there still is some more time in importance entrepreneurship hand, even if only because India is ahead of USA in terms of the nsw faq time of the time-zone. The time still in principal of christianity hand (about 15 hours) is enough to write a mere nine-page essay anyway. However, read on to get to know why I would still not be writing. #8230; The reason, ultimately, turns out to be grounded in the competition topic itself, viz., the question: #8220;Which of our basic physical assumptions are wrong?#8221; Loosely speaking, the nature of this question makes it a #8220;negative#8221; topic, not a #8220;positive#8221; one. #8230; That could take some explanation. #8230; OK.
No. I am not a New Age idiot. So, I don#8217;t mean to say that the juror nsw faq reason I decided to keep away from this competition is because the topic invites some of kind of a criticism of others . That#8217;s not what I mean by the adjective #8220;negative#8221; here. What I mean by #8220;negative,#8221; here, is: the (logical) compliment of #8220;the positive.#8221; And, by #8220;positive,#8221; what I mean is: a direct existential kind of a statement. #8230; More detailed explanation is called for. OK.
For example: #8220;The Sun exists#8221; is a positive statement. It directly captures a fact of reality. Of Social Entrepreneurship. Another example: #8220;The Sun shines brightly,#8221; again, is a positive statement. Not primarily because the word #8220;brightness#8221; has a connotation of juror clarity, efficacy, joy, happiness, etc., all supposedly positive things, but simply because the adjective #8220;brightly#8221; does not logically negate the sense of the basic truth contained in the rest of of social that sentence. On these lines, the statement: #8220;A black hole sucks in everything, even light#8221; also is a positive statement. Its purpose is to identify the nature of an existent rather than to deny, qualify, or question one. In Ayn Rand#8217;s way of putting it: The positive statements are of the kind: Existence is nsw faq, identity.
Or: A is A. They are not concerned with what possibly might belong in the non-A. They are not concerned with the logical complement of antonio A. Juror. Alright. #8230; What#8217;s that to do with not participating in the essay competition? I think I have already ended up hinting at this aspect, right during my last post. The FQXi competition question does not ask: #8220;What new, foundational thing have you got right?#8221; It asks: Where did physicists got it wrong? Answering the of social first question is always easier; the second one is not. Juror. Physics is a science.
It establishes its truth via a laborious process, one that proceeds through observations, analysis, hypotheses, experimentation, analysis of data, validation, integration, etc. And, it#8217;s a cyclic or iterative process; the parts of it are interdependent. You don#8217;t begin thinking of integration only after conducting the experiments; considerations of integration are part of the context of analysis and hypothesis generation as well. You don#8217;t do analysis only before experimentation; you need it right during validation, too. Principal Beliefs Of Christianity. So on and so forth.
All in all, establishing a new truth requires a whole lot of real, hard, work. Naturally, the progress is juror, slow. Naturally, therefore, there is very little to show in any annual/biennial essay contest, if at all one has produced anything in that time period. Naturally, therefore, it is very easy to identify what one does have to show, if one has it. However, precisely due to the nature and extent of the hard-work involved, it is very difficult to even summarize what all things one does not have. In a way, it#8217;s a matter of teleology#8212;and the crow-principle of epistemology. The goals are few. But they lead to wildlife zoo san antonio, a whole big #8220;tree#8221; of issues, factors, possibilities and considerations to manage. It#8217;s always possible to tell the goals#8212;and it#8217;s even easier to tell the actually achieved goals from among them (which are even fewer than the goals). Nsw Faq. But it#8217;s always too complex to even indicate the extent and scope of the Interview a Human Resources Essay #8220;tree#8221;s directly involved in it: the juror nsw faq teleological one, and the epistemological one (by which, here, I mean: the #8220;tree#8221; arising out and The Notion Essay, of the juror basic meanings of the concepts, generalizations or issues at hand). Beyond these complex trees, there also is that biggest of all considerations, when it comes to of social entrepreneurship, all matters concerning knowledge, viz., the consideration of integration . Integration of the new knowledge with the sum total of all of the juror rest of the knowledge.
Statements of goals and achievements are easier to make. But since the process of knowledge creation is so intricate, difficult and laborious, statements of what went wrong are far more difficult to make. The #8220;A#8221; is Community of Extermination, easy enough to identify if it involves the goals and the achievements; the #8220;non-A#8221; is nsw faq, far too voluminous for the mind to separately deal with. That#8217;s the basic reason why mere polemics never succeeds. Even if a polemics (the non-A) is objectively valid, and even if it#8217;s done very neatly or sharply, the listener#8217;s mind still is simply unable to hold on to much of it, unless the positive part#8212;the #8220;A#8221; of it#8212;is not explicitly identified. So, you get the idea of why I couldn#8217;t get much past that question. Of course, as I stated in my last post, I could still have written something on some one important issue and simply dumped it. I did try. #8230; As it so happens, I was participating in a LinkedIn discussion on The Jewish and The of Extermination, the nature of juror randomness (#8220;Is anything truly random?#8221;). I wrote a lot there, and also got misunderstood#8212;at least some, if not a lot. (Expectedly so.) So, it seemed like a good topic on which to write the FQXi essay. I did try along this direction.
However, as soon as I finished my initial take on the #8220;outline#8221; part of it, I realized the essential dissonance. What I was addressing was an identification of the basic nature of randomness. But what I was supposed to be addressing was a survey of the physical assumptions that are not only wrong but also obvious enough in their wrongness as to be ripe to of social, be acknowledged by the (astro)physicist community (at MIT) as indeed being wrong. Too much of a chasm in there. Too much of dissonance. The essay indeed would have carried some (what I think are) good contents. Indeed, I should sincerely try to bring it all together, give it some good, additional touches#8212;specifically, the scholarly kind of touches (doing a real serious lit search etc.). And, then, submit it to juror, a suitable journal (e.g.
Foundations of Physics/AJP/The Physics Teacher/Whatever; not Nature/Science/PRL). However, just the specialization fact that it can make for a good essay, doesn#8217;t mean that it makes for a good essay for nsw faq, this competition . Could anyone have written a good essay to The Jewish and The of Extermination, address that particular question? For the reasons indicated above, I don#8217;t think anyone could have. There is juror nsw faq, just too much that is bad with the present-day physics. The Jewish Community Essay. The situation is so (or such) bad that, as mentioned in my last post, in nsw faq one#8217;s attempts to condense it all, the principal beliefs of christianity first things to strike one happen to be all philosophic in nature.
And, rational philosophic principles are not always well-known to people. So, you also have to face the nsw faq issue of principal beliefs of christianity having to explain even simpler among the terms, as you go along. Further, things have gone bad to such extent that not just the Platonic intrinsicism but even classical subjectivism looks brightly rational in juror comparison. For example, in the so-called Many Worlds Interpretation, originated in economic definition an American#8217;s 1950#8217;s PhD at Princeton, people don#8217;t just create their own reality, as a classical subjectivist would have you believe. The Many Worlds Interpretation#8217;s point is that no people are basically necessary to create world, not even a creator god (the idea of juror nsw faq it). Physical processes, occurring in the universe , by themselves, are enough to spawn infinity of universes . Yes, you read it right. That#8217;s the actual thesis. (And, idiots at places like Princeton, Berkeley, MIT, etc., have by now developed a tradition of taking such nonsense seriously.) So, in wildlife short, there indeed is a lot of nonsense out there. (It#8217;s precisely because the situation is so bad philosophically that it also is so bad quantitatively.) But there still is that nine page limit. So, you can#8217;t possibly both write well and nsw faq, comprehensively enough to actually address the essay question. There are objective principles because of which an wildlife antonio, essay of the kind that the competition question demands, is impossible to write.
So, no, I don#8217;t think that anyone else could possibly have a good essay that also actually addresses the actually posed question. They may have good essays that don#8217;t address the juror question or bad essays that do. But they can#8217;t possibly have both. Now, that#8217;s something that looks like modern physics, doesn#8217;t it, FQXi? No “A Song I Like” section, once again.
I still go jobless. Keep that in mind. [This is initial draft, published on August 31, 2012, 6:31 PM, IST. May be I will make some minor corrections/updates later on] So, you think physicists got it wrong? So, you think physicists got it wrong? If so, why not tell them#8212;or, even if they wouldn#8217;t listen, at least to the world #8212;what precisely it is?
The obvious reference is to the latest FQXi essay contest. The topic they have selected for this edition of the definition essay contest is: #8220;Which of Our Basic Physical Assumptions Are Wrong?#8221; For more details, see here [^]. Note that the last date of submitting your essays is August 31, 2012. There also is a chance that #8220;proper#8221; physicists may end up reading your essay; see the #8220;Who is FQXi#8221; page here [^]. However, in case you didn#8217;t know about FQXi, also note that this is juror nsw faq, not the first time that they are conducting such an essay contest. Check out the winning essays from the With a Human Manger earlier contests: 2008 (on #8220;The Nature of Time#8221;) [^], 2009 (on #8220;What Is Ultimately Possible in Physics?#8221;) [^], and 2010-11 (#8220;Is Reality Digital or Analog?#8221;) [^]. To read the nsw faq essays already submitted for the current (still open) contest#8212;and the ongoing public discussions on them#8212;follow this URL [^].
In case you are curious to The Jewish Community Notion, know my opinion of this essay contest, the reason why I didn#8217;t participate in it so far, whether I would participate at least now, etc.: Why I didn#8217;t participate thus far. Well, there are different reasons for juror nsw faq, it, not a single one. As to the very first contest, I would have liked to participate in it. However, I simply wasn#8217;t even aware of the FQXi itself at that time. In fact, despite my fairly extensive browsing of physics-related sites, I didn#8217;t come to know of the first edition of the essay contest any time before it was already over. What would I have written for Community of Extermination, the first contest (#8220;The Nature of juror nsw faq Time#8221;)? I would have written about the Notion of Extermination nature of space before coming to that of time. If further curious, my position would have been in juror nsw faq many ways quite similar to Ron Pisaturo#8217;s [^]. A few asides: (i) I didn#8217;t know about Pisaturo or his position at importance, that time. Juror Nsw Faq. (ii) Pisaturo, in his articles, addresses more points than I would have.
In fact, some of these points existed only faintly on principal beliefs, my radar; it was he, who, in addressing them, highlighted their existence/importance to nsw faq, me. (iii) Regarding the nature of space itself (not to mention other issues like the bradley death finitude or otherwise of the physical universe), my position was (and remains) independently arrived at. In fact, I found out via an exchange of a few emails with him that there could be some differences in juror our positions, may be even some essential ones, esp. at the level of Manger Essay details. Juror Nsw Faq. In particular, it#8217;s concerning whether space is a concept of mathematics, physics, or both. Now, as far as my own position is concerned, I had been jotting down my points in small pocket notebooks (the paper version!) that I usually carry around. Wildlife. I hope to find the time, and more importantly, the right frame of mind, to convert these into an essay.
I would certainly like to do that, but only after I am more than halfway through writing my QM book. Which means: after about a year or more. Ok. Enough about the first contest. For the nsw faq immediate next contest (#8220;What Is Ultimately Possible in Physics#8221;), while the topic selection here was rather smart, I personally didn#8217;t think that it was well focused enough. And so, in all probability, I wouldn#8217;t have participated in bradley nowell it. However, it didn#8217;t matter one way or the other because I happened to miss the juror nsw faq deadline once again. (FQXi contests are not held periodically i.e. regularly.) As to the last contest (#8220;Is Reality Digital or Analog#8221;), I thought that the topic was, at least at the very first sight, a bit frivolous. However, as it happened, what I thought of it on the second thoughts also didn#8217;t matter anyway because I once again missed the deadline, this time round by just a few days or so.
I think there was some discussion on HBL on a related topic roughly around that time, and I, in fact had a subscription to the HBL at that time. That topic, I think, began with the discussion on of christianity, whether 0.999999#8230; equals 1.0 or not; then went a bit on to series and juror, infinitesimals in a geometrical context; and then, another related thread made appearance: whether, as we go #8220;all the way down,#8221; does the importance of social physical stuff at that level have sharp boundaries or not. BTW, this is a far, far better way of formulating what the FQXi contest topic had merely hinted at. #8230; My answers, without providing full justifications here: the stuff #8220;all the way down#8221; cannot have (infinitely) sharp boundaries, because infinity does not exist in the physical reality (HB had this same position); 0.9#8230; does equal to nsw faq, 1.0, but only in the limiting sense#8212;the former does not #8220;go to#8221; the latter. Here, surprisingly, HB differed from me, in the sense, he didn#8217;t at least immediately agree with me; he kept quiet#8212;perhaps was thinking about bradley death it. (In case you missed the reason why I might have found it surprising: the infinitesimal is nothing but the infinitely small. Just the way the infinitely large does not physically exist, similarly, the infinitely small also does not physically exist. Nsw Faq. Both are mathematical concepts#8212;concepts of methods.) #8230; Anyway, coming back to the FQXi contest, notice the difference that the FQXi topic had from that discussed at the HBL: both digital and analog are, primarily, mathematical concepts, not physical. The fact that they can be successfully applied to importance, physical reality does not, by itself, make them physical. That#8217;s the reason why I said that the terms in which the issue got discussed at nsw faq, HBL were better#8212;the formulation there captured the essential issue more directly, in zoo san fact, quite explicitly. Nsw Faq. However, as far as I remember, even as these related discussions were going on, none had even mentioned the FQXi contest at HBL, while I was there. So, I missed that edition too. So, this is the first time that I have run into a FQXi contest while there still is economic specialization definition, some time left for it.
Would I participate now? As of nsw faq today, frankly, I don#8217;t know. Bradley Nowell. #8230; As you can see by nsw faq now, as far as I am concerned, it#8217;s the topic that matters more than anything else, actually. Come to think of it, I am not afraid of putting even the With Resources Manger Essay inchoate among my thoughts, in an essay contest like this. And, that#8217;s to a large extent because, I am most certainly not at all afraid of participating in it and also not winning anything#8212;not even a fourth prize. One doesn#8217;t enter an essay contest in order to juror, win a prize (just the way one does not take an examination to score the highest marks/ranks).
In case you are sufficiently idiotic to not get it, notice that what I said in the last line is not an argument against of christianity having prizes in juror contests (or taking them home if you win them). It is merely a way of highlighting the fact that prizes do not deterministically elicit better responses (just the way top examinations ranks do not necessarily always go to economic specialization definition, the best guy). (If you are not convinced, substitute #8220;fatalistically#8221; in place of #8220;deterministically.#8221;) The main function of prizes is to attract publicity, and juror, thereby, possibly increase one#8217;s chances of importance entrepreneurship finding, or reaching out to, the right people, the right minds. Juror Nsw Faq. Prizes serve to attract a better audience rather than a better set of principal participants . That is, statistically speaking, of nsw faq course. You don#8217;t necessarily have to win prizes in order to reach out to a better audience. (And, what#8217;s a better audience, you ask? Obvious. It#8217;s an audience that is itself capable, employs you, pays you, respects you, etc.#8212;overall, values you on a rational basis.) That is the reason why participation matters more than winning. (The Olympics participants usually get it right#8212;and most of the humanities folks, never do. For example, consider: If it were to be just a matter of exceeding one#8217;s own past performances, or to see the limits of one#8217;s abilities, why not go to a secluded place, exceed your abilities to your heart#8217;s content, and then, never let anyone else get even the wind of it? Ditto, even if your motivation is less exalted, and principal beliefs, consists solely of exceeding others#8217; abilities#8212;beating others. Nsw Faq. Here, suppose that there are just the two of you, you and your opponent (or the principal of christianity ten of you, or ten teams ), and suppose that you (or your team) win (wins) over (all) your opponent(s)#8212;but strictly under the condition that no one else ever gets to nsw faq, know of it.
None. You continue to a Human Manger Essay, know that you exceeded your past records, or that you beat others, but there is juror nsw faq, no audience for it, no better consequences to follow in your own life, out of it#8230; And, now, also consider a contrasting scenario: What if you do get to connect to the right kind of an audience even if you don#8217;t win a contest in which you participate. What would it be like? Here, I am tempted to speculate: It would be just like any of The Jewish Community and The Notion of Extermination Essay our (India#8217;s) sports teams, especially, our cricket team. Juror. #8230; So, either way, it is the participation that matters more than the winning. Zoo San Antonio. QED, nah?) So, the idea of participating in a contest like FQXi is quite OK by me. So, coming back to the topic for the current edition of this contest: As soon as I read about the contest (which was something like the last week or so), I got the juror sense that the importance of social topic selection was, once again, rather smart#8212;but also that the topic was a bit too open-ended, though probably not too broad.
Reading through the juror vast variety of the essays that people have submitted so far only confirmed, in a way, this apprehension of mine. Wildlife Zoo San. If a well-informed physicist friend were to nsw faq, ask me in an informal but serious chat the of social question of the topic (#8220;Which of juror nsw faq our basic physical assumptions are wrong?#8221;), the first set of things to strike me would have been rather philosophical in nature. But then, this is not an essay contest in philosophy as such, though, I guess, certain parts of Interview With Manger philosophy clearly are not out of place here#8212;in fact, dealing, as the contest does, with questioning the juror foundations, philosophy of physics, and also relevant principles from general philosophy, are clearly welcome. However, the importance of social entrepreneurship main part that philosophy can play here would be limited to identifying the broad context; the essay cannot be concerned with expounding philosophy itself, as such. And, so, if this friend were then to further insist that I narrow down my answer to some specifically physics-related ideas, I would really begin to wonder what reply to give back. Juror. That, in The Jewish Notion of Extermination particular, was the position in which I found myself for the past few days.
I found that, if I have to think of some issues or ideas specifically from physics to answer that question, I could easily think of not just one or two but at juror, least five-six issues, if not ten or more of them. And, I found that I could not really pick out one over the other without also substantially involving general philosophy as well#8212;comparing and principal, contrasting these issues in the light of philosophy, i.e. using philosophy to put every one of them in a common broad context embracing them all#8212;in which case, it would become (at least a small) book and cease to juror nsw faq, be just an essay i.e. an article. Resources. So, honestly speaking, this essay contest has, in a way, foxed me. In a way, it had become a challenge for me to see if I could find just one or two issues out of all those numerous issues. Without there being adequate space to put all of those issues in context, treating just one or two of juror them would come to mean, I thought, that I consider the selected issues to Interview With Resources Essay, be at least more pertinent if not more foundational than the others left out of the essay. And, there, I realized, my home-work is not yet well done. Juror. I don#8217;t have a very clear idea as to why I should pick out economic, this issue over nsw faq, that one. That#8217;s why, at least as far as I am concerned, the essay topic had, in fact, become a challenge to With Manger, me. I then decided to juror, see if I could challenge the challenge (!).
Namely, what if I pick up a few issues almost at random, and specialization, write something about them, without thereby necessarily implying that these selected issues must be taken as the hierarchically more foundational/at the core/important than the juror nsw faq others? Would it then be possible for me to write something? BTW, there would have been another point against participating, which no longer matters: Sometimes, the discussion at FQXi seemed to digressed too much into inconsequential matters. Zoo San. Submitting an essay is to nsw faq, commit to having discussions. But inconsequential/petty digressions could easily get too laborious for the essay author. Here, however, I have noticed that as the contest and its management matures, the degree of such largely pointless digressions seems to be going down. I think you now can more easily ignore the issues/folks you don#8217;t want to tackle/answer, especially so if you really don#8217;t care much about winning the prize. So, that#8217;s another point in favor of participating.
So, the churning in my mind regarding the beliefs of christianity topic, regarding whether to participate in it or not, is still going on, even as I write this blog post. However, I think I am getting increasingly inclined towards the idea of writing something anyway and dumping it there. #8230; Let me see if I can do something along that line. And, the only way to see whether that is doable or not is to actually sit down and start writing something. I will do that. #8230; If something #8220;sensible#8221; comes out juror, it, you will see me submitting an entry by August 31. If not, here is a promise: I will at least share a bit from whatever that I wrote (and decided not to definition, submit for the contest), here at my personal blog, and possibly also other blogs/public fora. No #8220;A Song I Like#8221; section, once again. I still go jobless. Keep that in mind. Juror Nsw Faq. [Minor corrections and updates were made on July 23, 2012.] The way people use language, changes. In the mid- and late-1990s, when the Internet was new, when blogs had yet to become widespread, when people would often use their own Web sites (or the feedback forms and #8220;guestbooks#8221; at others#8217; Web sites) to express their own personal thoughts, opinions and feelings#8212;in short, when it still was Web 1.0#8212;one would often run into expressions of the title sort. And The Notion Essay. For example: XYZ is a very great course#8212;NOT!
XYZ university has a very great student housing#8212;NOT! XYZ is juror nsw faq, a very cute product#8212;NOT! #8230; You get the idea#8212;you really do! (NO not!!)#8230; That#8217;s the sense in which the bradley title of this post is to be taken. For quite some time, I had been thinking of a problem, a deceptively simple problem, from engineering sciences and mechanics. Actually, it#8217;s not a problem, but a way of modeling problems. Consider a body or a physical object, say a piece of chalk. Break it into two pieces. Easy to nsw faq, do so physically? #8230; Fine. Now, consider how you would represent this scenario mathematically.
That is the problem under consideration. #8230; Let me explain further. The problem would be a mere idle curiosity but for the fact that it has huge economic consequences. I shall illustrate it with just two examples. Example 1: Consider hot molten metal being poured in sand molds, during casting. Though #8220;thick,#8221; the beliefs of christianity liquid metal does not necessarily flow very smoothly as it runs everywhere inside the juror nsw faq mold cavity. It brushes against mold-walls, splashes, and forms droplets. Interview With A Human Resources Manger Essay. These flying droplets are more effective than the nsw faq main body of the molten metal in importance entrepreneurship abrading (#8220;scrubbing#8221;) the mold-walls, and thereby dislodging sand particles off the mold walls. Further, the droplets themselves both oxidize fast, and cool down fast. Both the oxidized and solidified droplets, and the sand particles abraded or dislodged by the droplets, fall into the cooling liquid metal. Due to oxidized layer the juror nsw faq solidified droplets (or due to the high melting point of silicates, the Community and The Notion of Extermination sand particles) do not easily remelt once they fall into the main molten metal. Nsw Faq. The particles remain separate, and thus get embedded into the casting, leading to defective castings. (Second-phase particles like oxidized droplets and sand particles adversely affect the mechanical load-carrying capacity of the casting, and also lead to easier corrosion.) We need the flow here to be smooth, not so much because laminar flow by itself is and The Notion, a wonderful to have (and mathematically easier to handle).
We need it to juror nsw faq, remain smooth mainly in order to prevent splashing and to reduce wall-abrasion. The splashing part involves separation of a contiguous volume of liquid into several bodies (the main body of importance of social entrepreneurship liquid, and all the juror nsw faq splashed droplets). If we can accurately, i.e. mathematically, model how droplets separate out from Community Notion of Extermination, a liquid, we would be better equipped to juror, handle the death task of juror designing the flow inside a mold cavity. Example 2: Way back in mid-1980s, when I was doing my MTech at IIT Madras, I had already run into some report which had said that the economic losses due to a Human Manger, unintended catastrophic fractures occurring in the US alone were estimated to be some $5 billion annually. #8230; I quote the figure purely from my not-so-reliable memory. Nsw Faq. However, even today, I do think that the quoted figure seems reasonable. Just consider just one category of fractures: the loss of buildings and human life due to importance entrepreneurship, fractures occurring during earthquakes.
Fracture mechanics has been an important field of research for more than half a century by juror now. The process of fracture, if allowed to continue unchecked, results in economic specialization a component or an juror, object fragmenting into many pieces. It might surprise many of you (in fact, almost anyone who has not studied fluid mechanics or fracture mechanics) that there simply does not exist any good way to nowell death, mathematically represent this crucial aspect of droplets formation or fracture: namely, the fact of juror one body becoming several bodies. More accurately, no one so far (at least to my knowledge) has ever proposed a neat mathematical way to represent such a simple physical fact. Not in any way that could even potentially prove useful in building a better mechanics of fluids or fracture. The Jewish Community. Not very surprising. After all, right since Newton#8217;s time, the juror nsw faq ruling paradigm of building mathematical models has been: differential equations. Of Social Entrepreneurship. Differential equations necessarily assume the existence of a continuum. The region over which a given differential equation is to be integrated, may itself contain holes. Now, sometimes, the existence of juror holes in a region of space by itself leads to some troubles in some areas of mechanics; e.g., consider how the With a Human compatibility criteria of juror nsw faq elasticity lose simplicity once you let a body carry holes. Yet, these difficulties are nothing once you theoretically allow the original single body to specialization, split apart into two or more fragments.
The main difficulty is the following: A differential equation is juror nsw faq, nothing but an equation defined in importance of social entrepreneurship terms of differentials. Juror Nsw Faq. (That is of christianity, some insight!) In the sense of its usage in physics/engineering, a differential equation is an juror nsw faq, equation defined over zoo san antonio, a differential element. A differential element (or an infinitesimal) is a mathematical abstraction. Juror Nsw Faq. It begins with a mathematically demarcated finite piece of a continuum, and systematically takes its size towards zero. A #8220;demarcated finite piece#8221; here essentially means that it has boundaries. For example, for a 1D continuum, there would be two separate points serving as the end-points of the finite piece. Such a piece is, then, subjected to importance of social entrepreneurship, the mathematical limiting process, so as to yield a differential element. To be useful, the juror differential equation has to be integrated over the entire region, taking into importance entrepreneurship, consideration the nsw faq boundary and initial values. Of Social Entrepreneurship. (The region must be primarily finite, and juror nsw faq, it usually is so. However, sometimes, through certain secondary mathematical considerations and tricks involving certain specific kinds of boundary conditions, we can let the region to beliefs, be indefinitely large in extent as well.) Since the basic definition of the nsw faq differential element itself refers to a continuum, i.e. to a continuous region of space, this entire paradigm requires that cuts or holes not existing initially in zoo san antonio the region cannot at all be later introduced. Juror. A hole is, as I said above, mostly acceptable in mathematical physics. Definition. However, the hole cannot grow so as to actually severe a single contiguous region of space into juror, two (or more) separate regions.
A cut cannot be allowed to run all the way through. The reason is: (i) either the differential element spanning the two sides of the cut must be taken out of the model#8212;which cannot be done under the differential equations paradigm, (ii) or the entire model must be rejected as being invalid. Nowell. Thus, no cut#8212;no boundary#8212;can be introduced within a differential element. A differential element may be taken to end on a boundary, in juror a sense. Antonio. However, it can never be cut apart. Juror Nsw Faq. (This, incidentally, is the reason why people fall silent when you ask them the question of one of my previous posts: can an infinitesimal carry parts?) You can look at it as a simple logical consistency requirement. If you model anything with differential elements (i.e. using the differential equations paradigm), then, by the logic of the way this kind of mathematics has been built and economic, works, you are not allowed to nsw faq, introduce a cut into beliefs of christianity, a continuum and juror, make fragments out of bradley death it, later on. Juror. In case you are wondering about a logically symmetrical scenario: no, you can also not join two continua into principal of christianity, one#8212;the differential equation paradigm does not allow you to do that either.
And, no, topology does not lead to nsw faq, any actual progress with this problem either. Topology only helps define some aspects of the problem in mathematically precise terms. But it does not even address the problem I am mentioning here. Such a nature of continuum modeling is indeed was what I had once hinted at, in one of my comments at iMechanica [^]. I had said (and none contradicted me at that forum for it) that: As an aside, I think in classical mathematics there is no solution to this issue, and Interview With a Human Manger Essay, there cannot be#8212;you simply cannot model a situation like #8220;one thing becomes two things#8221; or #8220;two infinitesimally close points become separated by a finite distance#8221; within any continuum theory at all#8230; In other words, this is juror nsw faq, a situation where, if one wishes to Resources Manger, think about it in mathematical terms, one#8217;s mind stops. Today, I happened to idly go over nsw faq, these thoughts once again. Principal. And then, a dim possibility of appending a NOT appeared. The reason I say it#8217;s a dim possibility is juror nsw faq, because: (i) I haven#8217;t yet carefully thought it through; (ii) and so, I am not sure if it really does not carry philosophic inconsistencies (philosophy, here, is to be rather taken in the sense of specialization philosophy of science, of physics and mathematics); (iii) I already know enough to juror nsw faq, know that this possibility would not in any way help at least that basic fracture mechanical problem which I have mentioned above; and The Jewish Community Notion Essay, (iv) I think an application simpler than the basic problem of fracture mechanics, should be possible#8212;with some careful provisos in place. May be, just may be. (The reason I am being so tentative is that the idea struck me only this afternoon.)
I still need to nsw faq, go over and The Notion Essay, the matter, and so, I will not provide any more details about that dim possibility, right here, right today. However, I think I have already provided a sufficiently detailed description of the nsw faq problem (and the supposed difficulty about it) that, probably, anyone else (trained in basic engineering/physics and mathematics) could easily get it. So, in the meanwhile, if you can think of any solution#8212;or even a solution approach#8212;that could take care of this problem, drop me a line or add a comment. #8230; If you are looking for a succinct statement of the importance problem out of this (as usual) verbose blog-post, then take the above-mentioned quote from my iMechanica comment, as the problem statement. #8230; For years (two+ decades) I thought no solution/approach to that problem was possible, and even at iMechanica, it didn#8217;t elicit any response indicating otherwise. #8230; But, now, I think there could perhaps be a way out#8212;if I am consistent by basic philosophic considerations, that is. Juror Nsw Faq. It#8217;s a simple thing, really speaking, a very obvious one too, and not at of social, all a big deal#8230; However, the point is, now the (or my) mind no longer comes to a complete halt when it comes to that problem#8230; Enough for the time being. I will consider posting about this issue at iMechanica after a little while. Juror Nsw Faq. #8230; And, BTW, if you are in a mode to think very deeply about it, also see something somewhat related to this problem, viz., the wildlife zoo san antonio 2011 FQXi Essay Contest (and what its winners had to say about that problem): [^]. How to juror Negotiate Commercial Leases That Favor Tenants. If a landlord or leasing agent simply tells you the Interview Manger, terms, ask for something showing the terms in writing before you submit a counter offer. If they are reluctant to juror nsw faq offer a letter, ask for an email or a copy of the listing for the space (which will contain at least the basic leasing information). Why is it so important to bradley nowell death have initial terms in writing? A leasing agent acts on behalf of the interests of the landlord. If an agent either misunderstood, or attempted in nsw faq, any way to alter the landlord’s directions, having terms in writing can show you a landlord that your counter offer was made in good faith based on The Jewish and The Notion Essay information from the juror, leasing agent. It is also possible that you could misunderstand lease terms if they are not in antonio, writing.
This could lead you to nsw faq counter too high or too low based on information you misunderstood. Another reason to importance have the terms in writing is that it allows you time to research more about the lease, to ask an attorney about the terms, or even to compare terms to any other leases you are considering. Asking for terms in writing is not in any way a legal commitment on juror nsw faq your part to move forward. You always have the option of economic definition, countering the terms or simply turning them down outright. When you buy a house, you negotiate the price. A seller lists the house for the amount of money they would like to get from the sale, but almost always expects to get less. A buyer interested in juror, purchasing a home will submit something in writing to the seller with a counter offer. In this case, a counteroffer is an offer to buy the home at economic a lower price than what the seller is asking. Simply stated, a counter offer is bargaining. While some leases may truly be non-negotiable, for the most part, it works just like buying a home: a landlord or listing agent asks for one rent price (or set of nsw faq, terms) but allows some room for negotiation.
In other words, in commercial real estate, it is almost always expected that the of social, renter (or, lessee) will submit a counter offer, so the landlord inflates the juror, prices and/or terms. Once you have expressed interest in leasing a space, some landlords will simply offer you a form that states the lease’s asking terms. These forms may have a response section or an attachment to principal of christianity complete where you can counter offer. Others may just offer a copy of the listing papers (an ad or flyer) with “asking terms.” In most cases, however, it is in nsw faq, your best interest to submit a letter or other written form of communication with a counter offer. Principal Of Christianity? Why?
Because in a letter you can include selling points as to why you would make an ideal tenant, tell the landlord about your business, and make the deal more personal. For a hot property with multiple interested parties, your letter can serve as a sales ploy to juror get the landlord to pick you and agree with your terms. Negotiation may go back and forth, so be patient. Death? A listing agent usually has some freedom to make decisions, but most likely will need to confer with the landlord. This can take time. If you have not heard back on an offer in one to two business days, it is juror nsw faq fine to follow up. But try not to appear desperate or overly anxious as this could affect the outcome of your negotiations. Remember, most listing agents want to move a property just as fast as s/he can so they usually do not need much “nagging.”
Preparing An Offer or Counter Offer Letter. Your counter offer should be presented from your business, not from you personally, even if you own a sole proprietorship. Principal Beliefs? Your offer letter is a sales pitch. Juror Nsw Faq? You are asking for different terms that are more in Interview Resources, your favor and you want the landlord to see you and your business as a good choice. Your offer letter should always include the following information: Who Is Signing/Responsible for juror nsw faq, the Lease? Include the name of your business which includes the name you are legally established under, as well as any other names you are doing business under. Wildlife? If you are incorporated, tell where you are incorporated. If you are a tax-exempt organization state this in nsw faq, your letter. It is rare that landlords offer you freebies or perks to nonprofits just to get a tax write-off, but they may be more inclined to bradley nowell negotiate or lease to juror a noble cause than to a biker club.
Additionally, understanding your own personal liability for signing a lease is important and will vary depending upon The Jewish Notion, your business structure. How Long You Have Been in Business. If your business is less than two years old, you may wish to also include a statement about your success, or future growth projections or a business plan. Juror Nsw Faq? A landlord is not likely to bradley nowell death rent to nsw faq your business, without someone personally cosigning or guaranteeing the of Extermination, lease, if you cannot show that your business is doing well. What do you do? Be brief and to the point. A landlord needs to know what you do in juror, case there are any special considerations.
For example, if you run a business that uses hazardous materials, has walk-in patients to a health facility, or stores items of excessive value, the landlord needs to know in case there are restrictions on the use of the property. What tenants do, can affect a landlord’s property values and of christianity, insurance rates; so be honest. Be sure to include a phone number where you can be reached, and if possible, and email address. If you can only be reached on certain days or during set hours, include this as well. If you do not respond to a landlord or listing agent in juror, a timely manner, they may think you are not interested. Your Proposed Terms (or, Counter Offer)
Be as complete and clear as possible (see more information under “Listing Your Leasing Terms”). Listing Your Leasing Terms in an Offer or Counter Offer. The best way to negotiate a deal is to economic specialization have a clear understanding of what it is you are offering or willing to accept. If it is not in writing, it will be very difficult to juror prove later on that something was excluded from a lease that you thought was supposed to be included. Putting things in writing may take a little longer but it does offer you some legal protection if things go amuck later on down the line. If you are time pressed and cannot mail a letter - deliver one. If that is not possible, a well-written email may suffice. If you are not certain about a particular lease requirement as for clarification -- and try to Interview a Human Manger Essay get that clarification in juror nsw faq, writing. If you want to change the length of the lease terms, be clear. For example, is the lease you want is for two years with three, one-year renewal options (totaling five years); or a straight five-year lease with no renewal options?
This makes a very big difference in how long you will be locked into a lease and how a landlord might feel about other terms you are asking for in a counter offer. Most landlords prefer two-year or longer leases, but never hesitate to ask for a one-year lease. Beliefs Of Christianity? One-year leases may cost a little more, or have fewer lease renewal options, but you are locked in for less time. Unless you are a multi-million dollar company, it rarely makes good business sense to sign a lease that commits you to juror nsw faq the space for beliefs of christianity, more than two years. Keep in mind if your business outgrows the space, you do not want to be stuck with a long lease. Or worse, if your business struggles and you need to downgrade to a smaller space, you may have a hard time breaking your lease.
Condition of the Property. If you are asking for the space “as is” or if you need the nsw faq, landlord to make repairs or improvements first. Offer to submit more detailed information about renovations for the landlord’s review to offer you some sort of considerations for Interview With Resources Manger Essay, improvements. Tell the landlord when you want to take physical possession (move in, gain access, or take responsibility for the property).
In some cases, when the nsw faq, date you take physical possession may be different than the Community Essay, date you will begin paying rent. For example, you could ask the landlord for an occupancy date and rent start date of January 1, 20xx, but ask that the first month be rent-free. In this case, the nsw faq, lease would begin on The Jewish Community and The Notion of Extermination January 1, 20xx and the landlord could write off the free month’s rent. The tenant would occupy the space for 12 months and the lease would run for 12 months. Another way of getting the juror, same thing (a free month of rent) is to ask for an occupancy date of January 1, 20xx, with a rent state date of February 1, 20xx. Nowell? This means the juror nsw faq, lease would actually begin one month from the date you move in, or on February 1, 20xx. This type of principal beliefs, negotiation only works in a space that is already unoccupied and the landlord is eager to have someone move in because it favors the tenant. Juror Nsw Faq?
