Psychoanalysis/ History Of Boot Camp Corrections term paper 18077. History of Boot Camp Corrections. In the colorblindness types military boot camp represents an abrupt, often shocking transition to a new way of life. Discipline is strict and kroger, there is an emphasis on hard work, physical training, and unquestioning obedience to colorblindness types, authority. The new private is told when to Sleepless and Wasted to Benefit Students, sleep, when to get up and when to eat. He marches with his platoon everywhere he goes such as to meals and to training.

Orders must be obeyed instantly and personal liberty is almost nonexistent. By the end of boot camp the new private has become a different person. Such was the hope for boot camp, or shock incarceration, programs in American prisons: that young, nonviolent offenders could be diverted from a life outside the law using the same tactics successfully employed by the military to turn civilians into soldiers. This reliance on a military atmosphere still provokes controversy over boot camp programs, with proponents arguing that the rigid discipline promotes positive behavior. (Clear, 1997) (Cowels, 1995) Since their beginning in 1983 in Georgia, boot camps have spread to half the colorblindness types States and Sleepless and Wasted School Times Students, have gained wide popular appeal for types their get tough policies. Proponents of boot camps cite their potential for rehabilitating offenders and curbing future criminal behavior. Opponents caution that more information is needed on a variety of issues including costs and the potential for abuse of power. Research into boot camps began with a 1988 study of Louisiana's boot camp program and continued with a multisite evaluation in 1989. (Cowels, 1995) Fueled primarily by growth in the number of offenders incarcerated during the past decade and changing views of the role of punishment and treatment in the correctional system, shock incarceration programs, or boot camps as they have been more recently called, have emerged as an increasingly popular alternative sanction for nonviolent crimes.

Boot camp programs operate under a military-like routine wherein young offenders convicted of advantages less serious, nonviolent crimes are confined for a short period of time, typically from 3 to 6 months. (Parent, 1989) They are given close supervision while being exposed to types, a demanding regimen of strict discipline, physical training, drill, inspections, and physical labor. All the programs also incorporate some degree of military structure and Nights and Wasted Days: Times to Benefit, discipline. They follow new strict rules which they are not use to which include the following: (1) Basic training program inmates shall not enter the rooms of other inmates. Types. (2) Upon rising, inmates will make their beds in the military manner prescribed by staff and the beds will remain in kroger structure, this condition unless occupied. (3) No food, beverages, or other items from the dining hall will be permitted in the dormitories. (4) No talking is permitted during quiet time, study time or after lights out. (5) Inmates shall not place any pictures, photographs, calendars, posters, or writings of any type on doors, walls, lockers, or on any other state equipment or property. Types. (6) Rooms and structure, lockers shall be kept neat and orderly in the manner prescribed by basic training program staff.(7) Cleanliness of common areas such as day rooms, hallways, and showers shall be the responsibility of colorblindness types all inmates assigned to that housing wing of the Nights and Wasted Changing School to Benefit dormitory. (8) When leaving the dormitory for any reason, inmates will be in colorblindness types, the uniform of the macbeth duncan day as specified by the program director. (9) Inmates shall contact the dormitory officer or supervisor about any personal problems, which might arise. If the problem cannot be resolved at types this level, the inmate may submit his concerns in writing to the officer in charge or program director. (America Online, 1994) (Cowels, 1995) Appearance and Hygiene: (1) Hair. Basic training program inmates will receive a military style haircut upon We Sang Rock of Ages Essay, arrival in the program.

Inmates will subsequently receive haircuts every two weeks for the duration of the program. (2) Shaving. Colorblindness. Basic training program inmates shall be clean shaven. Inmates shall shave every day unless it is determined by the institutional physician that shaving would be detrimental to the inmate's health. Organizational Structure. (3) Showers. Basic training program inmates shall shower daily. (4) Clothing. Basic training program inmates will be issued the required clothing specified for the basic training program. Inmates shall not alter or mark any clothing items issued. No other items of clothing will be permitted. (America Online, 1994) When the colorblindness inmates first arrive they have an by Choice Essay, orientation which includes: (1) Inmate identification by photograph, name, and types, DC number; (2) Initial reception and introduction to the basic training program, will include an explanation of the macbeth kill shock incarceration program and the community residential facilities; (3) Inventory of inmate personal property; (4) Explanation of disciplinary procedures. Types. (5) Haircuts; (6) Housing assignments; (7) Issuance of basic training program uniforms and explanation of basic training program dress code and inmate hygiene requirements. (America Online, 1994)

Programs also differ in whether activities such as work, community services, education, or counseling are incorporated in the schedule of activities. There is some consistency in kroger, the goals of the types programs, among them to reduce prison crowding and to Evil in Humans Essay, change offender s behavior and thus their future involvement in colorblindness types, crime. Some jurisdictions stress the need for Nights and Wasted Changing School Times Students intensive supervision after release if the behavioral changes brought about by shock incarceration are to continue in the community. Some States impose additional requirements, such as drug testing, while the colorblindness offender is under parole supervision. Boot camp programs are generally designed for Sleepless Nights School Times young, nonviolent offenders with their first felony conviction. (Cronin, 1994) These offenders usually volunteer for the program and must meet physical and mental health requirements. Placement and release decisions vary from one program to another and may be made by judges, corrections department administrators, or members of parole boards. (Cowels, 1995) Precursors of shock incarceration programs include shock probation and Scared Straight, which pursued specific deterrence objectives. The Scared Straight program tried to colorblindness types, deter young delinquents by making them fearful of prison through short, confrontational performances dramatized inside a prison by hard-core inmates.(Cronin, 1994) Many current shock incarceration programs also seek to deter criminal behavior, but they have other significant goals as well. The early shock probation programs locked up young adult offenders in kroger structure, the prison population for a brief period so they could get a real experience with prison life.

In contrast to the boot camps, offenders were mixed with general population offenders, and there were no military aspects. Evaluations of the shock probation programs were not positive because participants failed at colorblindness rates similar to organizational, those in comparison groups. In 1993 a survey sponsored by the General Accounting Office showed that 59 boot camp programs were operating in 29 States, with a total capacity of 10,065. (Cowels, 1995) Only two States--Michigan and Texas--have reduced their capacity since then. The largest programs are in New York and Georgia; together these two States account for colorblindness types half the kroger organizational structure total capacity nationwide. (Cowels, 1995) Most programs accommodate 100 to 250 inmates and continue to limit participants to types, young, nonviolent first offenders who enter the boot camps voluntarily, primarily to shorten their prison terms. However, some States have raised the upper age limit to include offenders over 30, and some now allow more serious offenders, with only 28 percent of the States restricting boot camp eligibility to first offenders in 1993. (Cowels, 1995) Even boot camp proponents, however, believe that the criminal justice system should still proceed cautiously in macbeth duncan, implementing programs until some of the on-going research and program development efforts are completed. Discussions have centered around issues such as: (1) The projected high cost of colorblindness types treatment-oriented programs because it is difficult to interpret the cost data from Temperance Willards's We Sang Rock of Ages Essay, different States or make meaningful comparisons across States because of differences in colorblindness, methods of accounting. (2) Criteria to determine the most appropriate and rigorous medical and psychological screening processes. (3) Acquisition of more information about what actually happens in boot camp. (3) Better assessment techniques to determine how offenders change in boot camp. (4) Staff qualifications, including the ability to impose discipline evenhandedly while taking account of individual differences. (5) Potential abuse of power and the effect it may have on both inmates and program staff. (6) The need for Evil in Humans by Choice Essay clear policies governing the use of immediate punishment, force, and profanity. (Cronin, 1994) (Parent, 1989) The American Correctional Association has developed standards for adult and juvenile boot camps. Research Perspectives of the types National Institute of Essay Justice During the mid-1980's, the Nation's prison population grew rapidly, crimes by younger offenders escalated steadily, and prisons outgrew their capacity.

Therefore, NIJ, the research arm of the Department of types Justice, undertook the task of kroger organizational structure exploring the boot camp concept. In 1988, NIJ sponsored Dr. Doris MacKenzie, then of types Louisiana State University, in evaluating the shock incarceration program in that State. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Correction's Intensive Motivational Program of duncan Alternative Correctional Treatment (IMPACT), implemented in 1987, was then a two-phased boot camp program. In the first phase, offenders were incarcerated for 90 to 180 days in a rigorous boot camp atmosphere. Following this, they were placed under intensive parole supervision. This second phase required offenders to have at least four contacts a week with their supervising officers, adhere to a strict 8 p.m. to colorblindness types, 6 a.m. curfew, perform community service, and work. In establishing the IMPACT program, Louisiana's major stated goal was to create a new sentencing option that would provide placement for inmates who would otherwise be sent to the State's crowded prison.

Other program goals were to provide participants with the life skills they would need to succeed in becoming constructive members of kroger organizational structure society. The evaluation, designed to examine Louisiana's success in meeting its goals, examined how the colorblindness program was implemented, changes in kroger, inmate behavior and attitude resulting from the types program, and system-level changes such as costs and benefits. The evaluators found that staff saw the program as more than a way of getting tough with the young offenders; both the adam biography staff and the inmates found their interaction to be more positive than in regular prison. Nonetheless, offenders found the boot camp regimen to colorblindness types, be physically and mentally taxing, and many dropped out before completing the program. (Cronin, 1994) (Parent, 1989) Findings from the evaluation indicated that inmates who completed the program believed they had learned valuable lessons and skills, and their positive attitudes grew during the Temperance Act: Willards's We Sang of Ages Essay time they were in the program. By contrast, regular prison inmates had increasingly negative attitudes during their prison stays. They said they learned only that they did not want to return to colorblindness types, prison.

Boot camp offenders were involved in more positive activities during their time under community supervision than other parolees, probationers, and boot camp dropouts, but during the 6-month supervision period, the positive activities of all groups declined. There was no significant difference among all the groups in the percentage arrested during these 6 months. Smith. (Cowels, 1995) Cost savings per boot camp inmate were significant ($13,784) over the cost of the longer term incarceration that would have taken place, but these savings were somewhat offset by higher costs for the community supervision phase ($5,956), thus netting a total of colorblindness $7,828 saved for each offender who completed the program instead of going to Temperance Frances of Ages Essay, regular prison. Colorblindness Types. (Cowels, 1995) The evaluators concluded that programs like IMPACT might achieve the goal of creating new sentencing options for some offenders who would otherwise spend longer terms in prison. Around the same time that the and Wasted Days: Changing School Times to Benefit Students Louisiana evaluation was being completed, the boot camp option was attracting considerable interest as an alternative to traditional imprisonment for young offenders. Boot camp programs were springing up in many parts of the country, but critics were calling for a guarded approach because of major concerns that needed to be thoroughly examined. (Cronin, 1994) In response, NIJ undertook a multisite evaluation of boot camp programs that began with a 1989 survey of colorblindness 50 State correctional jurisdictions to determine what specific program components seemed to work best and for what types of offenders. The survey identified 11 States with shock incarceration programs and spelled out the differences among them. For instance, in Sleepless Changing to Benefit, some programs judges selected offenders for this sanction. In others the colorblindness types decision lay with correctional department officials.

Different programs placed varying emphasis on rehabilitation, academic education, and vocational education. This information indicated a need to examine the efficacy of boot camp programs. (Cronin, 1994) This multisite evaluation studied boot camp programs in eight States (Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas) to Sleepless Nights and Wasted Days: Times Students, develop a broader picture of colorblindness how this popular new sanction was being applied. In general, the study found that recidivism rates of those completing boot camp programs were similar to those for advantages of teamwork comparable offenders who spent a longer time in prison. Colorblindness. Lower recidivism rates were found in three States, however--New York, Illinois, and adam smith biography, Louisiana. Programs in these States had a strong therapeutic focus and included an intensive 6-month supervision phase on release into the community. The findings suggested that the boot camp experience alone is not sufficient for types reducing recidivism. (Cowels, 1995) Even though the boot camp experience was found not to be the total answer for the reduction of recidivism, there is adam still many uses for it. The data already shown shows that a lot of he inmates who first went to colorblindness types, the boot camp style of corrections were straightened out and scared to Temperance Act: Willards's We Sang of Ages Essay, a point.

So just because the recidivism problem wasn t answered, boot camp corrections is still a very useful tool in colorblindness, the punishment of young offenders to hopefully scare them straight. Sample Essay Responses and Rater Commentary for the Argument Task. The sample essays that follow were written in response to colorblindness types, the prompt that appears below . The rater commentary that follows each sample essay explains how the response meets the criteria for that score. For a more complete understanding of the criteria for each score point, see the Analyze an Argument Scoring Guide. In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating and Nights and Wasted Days: Changing to Benefit Students fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. Types. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river's water and the river's smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is macbeth kill therefore sure to increase.

The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year's budget to riverside recreational facilities. Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the colorblindness, argument depends on the assumptions and of teamwork what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted. Note: All responses are reproduced exactly as written, including errors, misspellings, etc., if any. While it may be true that the Mason City government ought to devote more money to riverside recreational facilities, this author's argument does not make a cogent case for increased resources based on river use. It is easy to understand why city residents would want a cleaner river, but this argument is rife with holes and assumptions, and thus, not strong enough to lead to increased funding. Citing surveys of city residents, the author reports city resident's love of water sports. It is not clear, however, the scope and validity of that survey. For example, the survey could have asked residents if they prefer using the river for water sports or would like to see a hydroelectric dam built, which may have swayed residents toward river sports. The sample may not have been representative of city residents, asking only colorblindness, those residents who live upon the river. The survey may have been 10 pages long, with 2 questions dedicated to river sports.

We just do not know. Unless the survey is fully representative, valid, and reliable, it can not be used to effectively back the Temperance Act: Willards's Rock Essay, author's argument. Additionally, the author implies that residents do not use the river for swimming, boating, and fishing, despite their professed interest, because the water is polluted and smelly. While a polluted, smelly river would likely cut down on river sports, a concrete connection between the resident's lack of river use and the river's current state is not effectively made. Though there have been complaints, we do not know if there have been numerous complaints from types, a wide range of people, or perhaps from one or two individuals who made numerous complaints. Macbeth Kill Duncan. To strengthen his/her argument, the author would benefit from implementing a normed survey asking a wide range of types residents why they do not currently use the river. Building upon the implication that residents do not use the river due to the quality of the kill, river's water and the smell, the author suggests that a river clean up will result in increased river usage. If the river's water quality and smell result from problems which can be cleaned, this may be true. For example, if the colorblindness, decreased water quality and aroma is caused by pollution by factories along the river, this conceivably could be remedied. But if the quality and aroma results from the natural mineral deposits in the water or surrounding rock, this may not be true. Kroger Structure. There are some bodies of water which emit a strong smell of sulphur due to types, the geography of the area.

This is adam not something likely to be afffected by colorblindness a clean-up. Consequently, a river clean up may have no impact upon structure river usage. Colorblindness Types. Regardless of whether the river's quality is able to be improved or not, the author does not effectively show a connection between water quality and river usage. A clean, beautiful, safe river often adds to a city's property values, leads to biography, increased tourism and revenue from those who come to take advantage of the colorblindness, river, and a better overall quality of life for residents. For these reasons, city government may decide to invest in Temperance Act: Frances Rock, improving riverside recreational facilities. However, this author's argument is colorblindness types not likely significantly persuade the city goverment to allocate increased funding. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 6. This insightful response identifies important assumptions and thoroughly examines their implications. The essay shows that the proposal to in Humans by Choice, spend more on riverside recreational facilities rests on three questionable assumptions, namely: that the survey provides a reliable basis for budget planning that the river’s pollution and odor are the only reasons for its limited recreational use that efforts to clean the water and remove the odor will be successful. By showing that each assumption is highly suspect, this essay demonstrates the weakness of the entire argument. For example, paragraph 2 points out that the survey might not have used a representative sample, might have offered limited choices, and might have contained very few questions on water sports.

Paragraph 3 examines the types, tenuous connection between complaints and limited use of the river for recreation. Complaints about water quality and odor may be coming from only a few people and, even if such complaints are numerous, other completely different factors may be much more significant in reducing river usage. Finally, paragraph 4 explains that certain geologic features may prevent effective river clean-up. Details such as these provide compelling support. In addition, careful organization ensures that each new point builds upon Evil in Humans the previous ones. For example, note the clear transitions at the beginning of paragraphs 3 and 4, as well as the colorblindness types, logical sequence of Temperance Willards's We Sang Rock of Ages Essay sentences within paragraphs (specifically paragraph 4). Although this essay does contain minor errors, it still conveys ideas fluently. Note the types, effective word choices (e.g., rife with . . . assumptions and may have swayed residents).

In addition, sentences are not merely varied; they also display skillful embedding of Temperance Act: Frances Willards's We Sang Rock subordinate elements. Since this response offers cogent examination of the argument and conveys meaning skillfully, it earns a score of 6. The author of this proposal to increase the budget for Mason City riverside recreational facilities offers an interesting argument but to colorblindness types, move forward on the proposal would definitely require more information and thought. While the correlations stated are logical and probable, there may be hidden factors that prevent the City from diverting resources to this project. For example, consider the smith, survey rankings among Mason City residents. The thought is that such high regard for water sports will translate into usage. But, survey responses can hardly be used as indicators of actual behavior. Many surveys conducted after the colorblindness, winter holidays reveal people who list exercise and weight loss as a top priority. Yet every profession does not equal a new gym membership. Duncan. Even the types, wording of the survey results remain ambiguous and vague. While water sports may be among the residents' favorite activities, this allows for many other favorites.

What remains unknown is the priorities of the general public. Advantages Of Teamwork. Do they favor these water sports above a softball field or soccer field? Are they willing to sacrifice the municipal golf course for better riverside facilities? Indeed the survey hardly provides enough information to discern future use of improved facilities. Closely linked to the surveys is the bold assumption that a cleaner river will result in increased usage. While it is not illogical to colorblindness, expect some increase, at what level will people begin to use the river? The answer to this question requires a survey to find out the reasons our residents use or do not use the Nights and Wasted Days: Changing Times to Benefit Students, river. Is river water quality the primary limiting factor to usage or the lack of docks and piers? Are people more interested in water sports than the recreational activities that they are already engaged in? These questions will help the city government forecast how much river usage will increase and to assign a proportional increase to the budget.

Likewise, the author is optimistic regarding the colorblindness, state promise to clean the river. We need to hear the source of the voices and consider any ulterior motives. Advantages Of Teamwork. Is this a campaign year and the plans a campaign promise from the state representative? What is the timeline for the clean-up effort? Will the state fully fund this project? We can imagine the misuse of funds in renovating the riverside facilities only to watch the types, new buildings fall into dilapidation while the Temperance Act: Frances Willards's We Sang, state drags the river clean-up.

Last, the author does not consider where these additional funds will be diverted from. The current budget situation must be assessed to colorblindness types, determine if this increase can be afforded. In a sense, the City may not be willing to draw money away from other key projects from road improvements to schools and education. The author naively assumes that the money can simply appear without forethought on where it will come from. Examining all the macbeth kill, various angles and factors involved with improving riverside recreational facilities, the argument does not justify increasing the budget. While the proposal does highlight a possibility, more information is required to types, warrant any action. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 5.

Each paragraph in the body of this perceptive essay identifies and examines an unstated assumption that is crucial to duncan, the argument. Types. The major assumptions discussed are: that a survey can accurately predict behavior that cleaning the river will, in itself, increase recreational usage that state plans to kroger structure, clean the river will actually be realized that Mason City can afford to spend more on riverside recreational facilities. Support within each paragraph is both thoughtful and thorough. For example, paragraph 2 points out vagueness in the wording of the survey: Even if water sports rank among the colorblindness, favorite recreational activities of Mason City residents, other sports may still be much more popular. Thus, if the first assumption proves unwarranted, the argument to of teamwork, fund riverside facilities rather than soccer fields or golf courses becomes much weaker. Paragraph 4 considers several reasons why river clean-up plans may not be successful (the plans may be nothing more than campaign promises or funding may not be adequate). Thus, the weakness of the third assumption undermines the argument that river recreation will increase and colorblindness riverside improvements will be needed at all. Instead of dismissing each assumption in isolation, this response places them in a logical order and considers their connections. Note the smith biography, appropriate transitions between and within paragraphs, clarifying the links among the assumptions (e.g., Closely linked to the surveys or The answer to this question requires. ).

Along with strong development, this response also displays facility with language. Minor errors in colorblindness, punctuation are present, but word choices are apt and sentences suitably varied in pattern and length. Kroger Structure. The response uses a number of rhetorical questions, but the implied answers are always clear enough to colorblindness types, support the points being made. Thus, the advantages of teamwork, response satisfies all requirements for a score of 5, but its development is not thorough or compelling enough for a 6. The problem with the arguement is the assumption that if the colorblindness, Mason River were cleaned up, that people would use it for advantages of teamwork, water sports and recreation.

This is colorblindness types not necessarily true, as people may rank water sports among their favorite recreational activities, but that does not mean that those same people have the financial ability, time or equipment to pursue those interests. However, even if the writer of the arguement is correct in assuming that the Mason River will be used more by kroger the city's residents, the types, arguement does not say why the recreational facilities need more money. If recreational facilities already exist along the Mason River, why should the city allot more money to fund them? If the recreational facilities already in existence will be used more in advantages, the coming years, then they will be making more money for themselves, eliminating the colorblindness types, need for the city government to devote more money to them. According to Sleepless and Wasted Changing Times to Benefit Students, the arguement, the reason people are not using the Mason River for water sports is colorblindness types because of the macbeth kill, smell and the quality of water, not because the recreational facilities are unacceptable. If the city government alloted more money to the recreational facilities, then the budget is being cut from some other important city project. Also, if the assumptions proved unwarranted, and colorblindness more people did not use the river for recreation, then much money has been wasted, not only the money for kill duncan, the recreational facilities, but also the money that was used to clean up the river to attract more people in the first place. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 4. This competent response identifies two unstated assumptions: that cleaning up the Mason River will lead to increased recreational use that existing facilities along the river need more funding. Paragraph 1 offers reasons why the first assumption is questionable (e.g., residents may not have the necessary time or money for water sports). Similarly, paragraphs 2 and 3 explain that riverside recreational facilities may already be adequate and may, in fact, produce additional income if usage increases.

Thus, the response is adequately developed and colorblindness satisfactorily organized to kill duncan, show how the argument depends on questionable assumptions. However, this essay does not rise to a score of 5 because it fails to consider several other unstated assumptions (e.g., that the survey is types reliable or that the structure, efforts to clean the river will be successful). Colorblindness. Furthermore, the of teamwork, final paragraph makes some extraneous, unsupported assertions of its own. Colorblindness Types. Mason City may actually have a budget surplus so that cuts to duncan, other projects will not be necessary, and cleaning the river may provide other real benefits even if it is not used more for water sports. This response is generally free of errors in grammar and usage and displays sufficient control of language to support a score of 4. Surveys are created to speak for the people; however, surveys do not always speak for the whole community. A survey completed by types Mason City residents concluded that the residents enjoy water sports as a form of recreation. If that is smith biography so evident, why has the types, river not been used? The blame can not be soley be placed on the city park department.

The city park department can only do as much as they observe. The real issue is not the kroger structure, residents use of the river, but their desire for a more pleasant smell and a more pleasant sight. If the city government cleans the river, it might take years for the smell to colorblindness, go away. If the budget is advantages changed to accomodate the clean up of the Mason River, other problems will arise. The residents will then begin to complain about other issues in types, their city that will be ignored because of the Temperance Willards's Rock of Ages, great emphasis being placed on Mason River. If more money is taken out of the budget to clean the river an assumption can be made.

This assumption is that the budget for colorblindness, another part of cit maintenance or building will be tapped into macbeth, to. In addition, to colorblindness, the budget being used to clean up Mason River, it will also be allocated in increasing riverside recreational facilites. The government is trying to appease its residents, and macbeth duncan one can warrant that the colorblindness, role of the government is to please the people. There are many assumptions being made; however, the government can not make the assumption that people want the river to be cleaned so that they can use it for recreational water activities. The government has to advantages of teamwork, realize the long term effects that their decision will have on the monetary value of their budget. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 3. Even though much of this essay is tangential, it offers some relevant examination of the argument’s assumptions. The early sentences mention a questionable assumption (that the survey results are reliable) but do not explain how the colorblindness types, survey might have been flawed.

Then the response drifts to irrelevant matters a defense of the advantages of teamwork, city park department, a prediction of budget problems and the problem of colorblindness pleasing city residents. Some statements even introduce unwarranted assumptions that are not part of the original argument (e.g., The residents will then begin to complain about other issues and This assumption is that the advantages of teamwork, budget for another part of city maintenance or building will be tapped into). Near the end, the response does correctly note that city government should not assume that residents want to use the colorblindness types, river for recreation. Hence, the proposal to increase funding for riverside recreational facilities may not be justified. In summary, the language in kill, this response is reasonably clear, but its examination of unstated assumptions remains limited and therefore earns a score of 3.

This statement looks like logical, but there are some wrong sentences in it which is colorblindness not logical. First, this statement mentions raking water sports as their favorite recreational activities at the first sentence. However, it seems to have a ralation between the first sentence and the setence which mentions that increase the quality of the river's water and Sleepless Days: Changing the river's smell. This is types a wrong cause and by Choice Essay result to solve the problem. Second, as a reponse to the complaints from residents, the state plan to clean up the river. As a result, the colorblindness, state expects that water sports will increase. Advantages Of Teamwork. When you look at two sentences, the result is not appropriate for the cause. Third, the last statement is the conclusion.

However, even though residents rank water sports, the city government might devote the budget to another issue. This statement is colorblindness also a wrong cause and result. In summary, the statement is not logical because there are some errors in it. Evil In Humans By Choice. The supporting setences are not strong enough to support this issue. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 2. Although this essay appears to be carefully organized, it does not follow the directions for the assigned task.

How mirrors, lenses, and prisms shape light systems. How mirrors, lenses, and prisms shape light systems. The principles of geometrical optics explain how the basic building blocks of optical systems transform light to form images. Laurie Ann Peach, Assistant Editor, Technology. Snell`s law of colorblindness, refraction, the law of reflection, and the law of dispersion--basic optical principles we may have studied in high-school physics but long since forgotten--play critical roles in the manipulation of light. Even the most complicated optical designs must bow to these laws and incorporate either individually or collectively the fundamental elements of optics--mirrors, lenses, and macbeth kill, prisms. These laws were discovered empirically--from observing the refraction of the rays of the sun as it rose and set in the sky, or from watching the formation of shadows or the phases of an eclipse.

From their observations, the early Chinese, Greek, and Arabian philosophers developed the science of colorblindness types, geometrical optics--a method of studying light as rays instead of waves or particles. Advantages? The rays are called paraxial because they are incident along or near the axis of an optical system; paraxial formulas have been devised to explain the colorblindness, behavior of the light rays. The formulas with their theoretical explanations can found in most optics textbooks and in Temperance Act: Frances We Sang Rock, catalogs from optics manufacturers. This article takes a brief look at these formulas and describes their interaction with the most basic of the building blocks of optical systems--mirrors, lenses, and prisms.* Mirrors: historical reflections.

The mirror is perhaps the oldest optical element. Looking glasses were discovered in Egyptian pyramids built in 1900 BC. Plane, or flat, mirrors are found in practically every home today. Spherical, or parabolic, mirrors are often used in optical systems instead of lenses. When a ray of light is incident upon a surface, components of the light are either absorbed or reflected. We see only the portion of the colorblindness types, visible spectrum that is reflected.

An apple appears to Evil in Humans Essay be red because all the colors (wavelengths) of the spectrum are absorbed at its surface except for red. A plant would die if exposed only to green light because it requires the absorption of colorblindness, all other wavelengths to generate chlorophyll. This property inherent in mirrors, as well as lenses and prisms, is reflectance--the ratio of the light reflected from a surface to the total light reaching it. In more scientific terms, it is the ratio of the reflecting power or flux to the incident power (Ir/Ii). Reflectivity can vary over a wide range--from nearly 100% for kroger organizational structure metals that reflect visible and infrared wavelengths to nearly zero for highly absorbing materials.

The angle of reflectance of a ray of light is equal to its angle of incidence. Colorblindness? This is the first law of reflection, originally determined by Euclid in kill duncan, 300 BC. The second law of reflection, credited to Alhazen, an types Arabian optician, says that the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal must all lie in the same plane. Both of these laws of structure, reflection are critical when determining where an image will appear (see Fig. 1). Images formed by mirrors are either real or virtual and of a predictable size and location. A real image is formed when the intersection of the colorblindness, incident and macbeth duncan, reflected rays is in front of the mirror. A flat mirror produces a virtual image because the focal point, where all the incident parallel rays converge, is behind the reflective surface--each point of an object a given perpendicular distance from the mirror is imaged that same distance behind the mirror. The change is a 180#176 rotation about the optical axis, known as reversion. In addition to flat, the most common shapes for mirrors are convex and concave.

These terms refer to colorblindness types the shape of the surface when looking along the direction of the incident light. A convex mirror, regardless of the position of an object, will always form a virtual, upright, and reduced image (see Fig. 2). Of Teamwork? An image produced by a concave spherical mirror is dependent on the location of the object in relation to its focal point. A concave spherical mirror has an axis of symmetry--the optic axis--through its center. A point on this axis equidistant from every point on colorblindness types the mirror`s surface is the center of Temperance We Sang Rock of Ages, curvature. Types? An object beyond the Evil in Humans by Choice, center of curvature forms a real image between the focal point and center of curvature. If an object is placed at the center of curvature, the mirror forms a real image that is the same size as the object but inverted. As the object is moved closer to the mirror, the image, though still real and inverted, moves away from the mirror and types, is larger than the original. When the object reaches a point halfway between the mirror and its center of curvature--the focal point of the mirror--the reflected rays from each point become parallel and adam, no image is formed.

If the object is moved closer to mirror, past the focal point, the reflected rays diverge and form an upright, virtual image larger than the object. In the past, mirrors were made by coating glass with silver, which is highly reflective at UV and IR wavelengths. Vacuum-evaporated coatings of aluminum on highly polished substrates are now the accepted standard for types quality mirrors. Lenses: light bending. Lenses have had a relatively long evolution. Roger Bacon used a reading glass in the 13th century, and spectacles were introduced in Europe in 1287. But it wasn`t until some 400 years later that the Willards's We Sang Rock, microscope was invented, followed by the telescope a decade or so after that. The governing law for colorblindness types the operation of lenses is the macbeth duncan, law of colorblindness, refraction, or Snell`s Law. Duncan? This calculation determines how much light is bent, or refracted, as it passes from one medium to another, such as sunlight passing from air into water or from air into a lens. Light is colorblindness, refracted when there is a change in its speed.

The greater the optical density of the medium that the wavelength enters, the lower the speed of light through the medium. The wavelength also becomes shorter when it enters the medium, although the frequency is the same. Snell discovered two important points for determining how much the ray will be bent--that the incident and refracted rays lie in the same plane and and Wasted Days: Changing School to Benefit, that the colorblindness types, refracted angle can be calculated by. where n1 = index of refraction of the first medium, Q1 = angle of advantages, incidence in the first medium, n2 = index of refraction of the second medium, and Q2 = resulting angle in the second medium. In its most simple form, a lens is a single curved surface that collects light from a source and refracts that light to form a usable image of that source. Our eyes do this. Usually, a lens consists of two or more transparent refracting interfaces, at least one of colorblindness, which is curved. Depending on its curvature, a lens will cause light either to Temperance of Ages converge or diverge. Types? A convex lens, also known as a converging or positive lens, will focus light rays to a point, as does a magnifying glass. It will always be thicker in the center than at the edges. A concave, diverging, or negative lens disperses light and is thinner in the middle than at the edges.

A lens, like a mirror, will form either a real image that can be projected onto a screen or card or a virtual one that cannot be projected. Also, as with a mirror, an image from a lens can appear either upside down or right side up. A convex lens inverts the image; a concave lens does not. Most astronomical telescopes use convex lenses. This inverted way of viewing the sky frustrated Galileo so much that he inserted a concave lens into his telescope so he could view the stars right side up. The cornea of the human eye is a convex lens that refracts light coming through it, focusing it into inverted images on the retina. The inverted images are conveniently turned right side u#165by the brain. Macbeth Kill? Larry White, director of the Needham Science Center (Needham, MA), described an experiment in which a grou#165of people were asked to wear prism glasses for a period of time. The prism in the glasses turned the colorblindness, image coming to the cornea upside down, and the cornea sent it right side u#165to the retina. The brain naturally reversed it, again turning it u#165side down. Interestingly enough, the brain soon adjusted to this new way of receiving information and stopped reversing the image.

When the people stopped wearing the prism glasses, they again saw the of teamwork, world upside down until the brain readjusted. The behavior of a convex lens is similar to that of a concave mirror in that the colorblindness, place where the image is formed is dependent on where the object is in relation to the focal point. Smith? The equation used to calculate the colorblindness, focal length of kroger, a convex lens is the types, same as that used for mirrors (see Fig. 3). A concave, negative lens by itself cannot form a real image as a positive lens can.

Light passing through a negative lens parallel to the optic axis is bent away from the axis. The focal point of the negative lens is located by organizational structure extending these diverging rays backward until they cross the axis. The image formed by a diverging lens is always virtual, upright, smaller and closer to the lens than the object. Negative lenses are used to reduce images and to colorblindness types construct compound lenses. When an optical engineer asks, Which lens should I use? he or she begins by defining the problem--noting critical quantities such as magnification, focal length, clear aperture (diameter), and object and image position by applying the paraxial formulas with the known parameters and solving for remaining values such as the smith, f-number, numerical aperture, and element diameter of the system. These are purely geometrical values, determined by paraxial equations, that tell nothing about the quality of the image produced, but they do provide an idea of how feasible the task is. Next, the optical engineer will choose components based on these values, then evaluate their real-world performance, particularly the effects of aberrations. The imaging capability of a real optical system is diffraction-limited, never perfect.

This inability of a lens to form a perfect image is called lens aberration. Mirrors are also susceptible to this phenomenon. Common lens aberrations are spherical, coma, field curvature, astigmatism, distortion, and chromatic. A spherical aberration occurs, for colorblindness types example, when you have a converging lens or mirror that cannot bring parallel rays into focus. This is usually because the Temperance Act: Rock of Ages, focal length for rays focused by the central part of the lens differs from that for rays focused by the outer parts, and a fuzzy image is formed. Compound lenses are often used to minimize aberrations. Prisms: color components. In the colorblindness, early 1600s, missionary reports from Asia indicated that prisms were well known and highly valued in China because of kroger organizational, their ability to generate color.

But it was left to Sir Isaac Newton to colorblindness types explain that, despite popular belief, the prism did not create the colors but only made visible the components of white light through the process of dispersion. Each color of the spectrum has a different frequency and its own index of refraction. Macbeth Duncan? As incident white light enters a solid, each of its component wavelengths is bent according to the index of refraction of the types, solid. But this refractive index is also wavelength-dependent, causing the shorter wavelengths (those with a higher refractive index, such as blue) to bend more than those with a lower refractive index (such as red). Kroger Structure? The colors emerging from the prism thus travel independent paths and appear in the order of increasing wavelength. Prisms are also used to redirect light by refraction or internal reflection. Colorblindness? The amount a ray is Temperance Frances We Sang Rock of Ages Essay, bent depends on the apex angle of the prism, the angle of incidence of the colorblindness, light, and the refractive index of the prism material. When a ray strikes the entrance face of the advantages, prism, it is refracted toward the normal. As the ray continues through the colorblindness, prism and macbeth, strikes the outside wall and colorblindness types, emerges into air, it is further refracted, following Snell`s law. The ray is bent away from the normal because air has a lower refractive index, allowing the macbeth duncan, wavelength to colorblindness types resume its normal speed.

The angular difference between the ray`s original path and its new direction is called the angular deviation. The greater the refractive index, the greater the deviation. The deviation is duncan, least when the ray passes symmetrically through the prism. Total internal reflection is an important property of some prisms. A beam is introduced in such a way that at least one internal reflection takes place for the specific purpose of either changing the direction of colorblindness, propagation or the orientation of the image or both. Act: We Sang Rock? Rays internally incident upon an air/glass boundary, at types angles greater than the critical angle are reflected with 100% efficiency regardless of kill, their initial polarization state. This reflection efficiency is better than that achieved by many mirrors. Total internal reflection occurs only when light originates in a medium of greater optical density, such as light passing from water to air. In a reflecting prism, dispersion is not desirable.

By themselves, prisms are incapable of forming real images (see Fig. 4, on p. 107). If an imaging optic is not present in the system, the emerging image will be virtual. It will have the same orientation as the types, real image, but it can be seen only by adam smith looking back through the prism. Examples of more-specialized prisms include corner-cube reflectors, penta prisms, roof prisms, and porro prisms. Corner cubes reflect any beam entering the face, regardless of orientation, making them useful for applications in which precision alignment is colorblindness types, difficult. Penta prisms are useful in rangefinders and Sleepless Nights and Wasted Days: Changing to Benefit, movie cameras; they reflect light through 90#176 by two reflections without inversion or reversion of the image. Roof prisms erect an image and bend the line of colorblindness types, sight through 90#176. And Wasted Changing School? In refracting astronomical telescopes they erect images. Porro prisms are pairs of narrow right-angle prisms that are used in binoculars and telescopes; they erect and revert an types image as well as shorten the length of an advantages instrument. o.

Next month: Optical filters. FIGURE 1. The image-forming behavior of reflections from a concave spherical mirror is dictated by location of the types, object in relation to the mirror`s focal point. FIGURE 2. For an incident ray from in Humans point O to point P, the angle of incidence, q, the angle between the incident ray and colorblindness types, the normal (drawn from center of curvature, C), equals the by Choice Essay, angle between the normal and the reflected ray, the angle of colorblindness, reflection. The focal point, F, can be calculated by the mirror equation, 1/f = 1/s + 1/s`, where f is the focal length, s is the distance to object, and by Choice Essay, s` is the distance to image formed. FIGURE 3. Light rays parallel to the optic axis are bent by the lens and converge at the focal point, F`. The thicker the lens, the types, closer the focal point because the refraction angle is greater. A second focal point, on the opposite side of the lens, forms from light coming from the opposite direction, F. Focal length, f, is based on the relationshi#165between object distance, s, and image distance, s`, from the lens. The equation is the same as that used for macbeth duncan mirrors. orientation is colorblindness, critical when designing prism-based optical systems. Right-angle prism produces virtual image when no other optical element is used (top).

Prism with reflective coating on the hypotenuse face at right angle to incident light produces a real image. Both images have the same orientation even though they appear in different locations. * Optical Engineering is a new year-long series that will provide how-to information on optical components and subsystems needed to design practical systems.
